The three other nominees were Born on the Fourth of July, Dead Poets Society and Field of Dreams. I know you hate Field of Dreams and think Dead Poets Society is overrated. So that leaves Born on the Fourth of July. Is that what you would have voted for? Probably, but at least Field of Dreams and Dead Poets Society are movies that I tend to remember exist... For Dracula

Hitchcock can't catch a break. I did give Psycho more Oscars than any other film that year. It's a tough call though. Psycho is obviously the more important film, but The Apartment is just perfect in every way it could be. I will say though, there are other years that if we do Hitchcock will come out on top for me. Editing was tough though. The editing in Breathless is, of course, insanely influential and groundbreaking, but the set-pieces in Psycho are perfectly cut (pun intended). Not only that, but the way the film switches perspectives is so seamless and the film also balances horror with story, character, and even humour well. In short, the editing tells the story. With Breathless, the editing style over powers the story and characters, so ultimately Psycho seemed the right choice in spite of the influence of Breathless.

The Apartment over La Dolce Vita, Psycho, and The Virgin Spring? All brilliant, brilliant films, but The Apartment just hits me on another level. I think it's a lot deeper and mature than people give it credit for, with wonderfully nuanced characters and really smart writing, and it earns that happy ending in a way that is very cathartic and inspiring. I love it. I can see where La Dolce Vita, Pyscho, and The Virgin Spring are bolder works, but the emotional response The Apartment generates in me is very, very rare. That's hard to create.

I certainly respect that.
La Dolce Vita isn't even my favorite Fellini, but it's my favorite film out of the ones listed. I'll re-watch The Apartment eventually.

It's my favourite Fellini right now, but I was young when I saw 8 1/2 and I need to revisit it. Granted, I loved the film at the time, but I still feel like I'd get more out of it now.
