You hacking my search history? Redbox crossed my mind just yesterday and I was curious if it was still around. Where there were once many Redboxes near me, now there are only 2 within reasonable distance.
I used to use it rather frequently back in the day, when Blockbuster was dead but before streaming was all the rage. I could find new releases for a buck without having to wait 3 months for Netflix to send me a broken disc. Even that would get irritating though when I would reserve a disc on the app, go to Ralph's to pick it up then wait for the asshole in front of me at the kiosk to scroll...scroll...scroll some more...read about some obscure Orlando Bloom movie...scroll some more...and that happened more than a couple of times. One time I almost snapped when I got to a kiosk, there were 3 or 4 people already waiting, I jumped to the back of the line, the dickhead at the front started the scrolling, whipped out his phone and started watching the trailer for a movie he scrolled by. I wanted to give him a crack but it's LA, you never know who has a gun. Anyways, it was a cheap but highly irritating way to stay on top of the movie game but the kiosk method has long since outlived its welcome. Do people even use the Redbox app?

Do people even use the Redbox app? I think you and I were the only ones here that actively used Redbox. I still get emails from them. Seems like they went the streaming route, but too little too late. They remind me of Blockbuster. They could have gone the Tubi or Pluto route but held on too long to their core business when all signs pointed to it dying out.

I've never used Redbox. I've been tempted a couple times, but the reality is that I just don't need it. Between my video library, Amazon Prime and whatever other streaming service I'm using this month, there's never been much point for me.

Back when Netflix disc-by-mail was still the rage.

One of my first dates with my now wife was a DVD of Captain Phillips, and I owe all of that to Redbox. Goodnight sweet prince.

The interface looks exactly like Netflix's.

I found what is almost certainly a sealed bootleg Blu-Ray of David Fincher's The Killer on Blu-Ray at a used movie and game store today. There's some oddities on the box and the film defaults to Chinese subtitles but those can be turned off, the film is in English, and the film looks good. Hell even the box looks good. I think I'll keep it on the shelf despite the heresy.

I'm sure Criterion will put it out at some point.

LOL. So apparently, people are just straight up robbing Redbox now. From what is being told, Redbox has gone “offline”, and so, if you go to one of the remaining kiosks and pay with a gift card (meaning it won’t be able to charge you beyond the first night), your account won’t be flagged because no one is checking anymore. So people are just emptying out the kiosks. I guess now's the time for Doomsday to start a Redbox collection. I’m pretty sure I still have Blockbuster DVD’s from when they closed down. I’m like 99.9% certain that my Quantum of Solace DVD (if I still have it somewhere) is from Blockbuster. I remember they had a deal that was like 5 movies, popcorn & candy for like $20-25. Shit, didn’t PhantomKnight and/or MasterChief clear out their Blockbuster at the time?? I vaguely recall someone posting about that. The Blockbusters around me closed shortly after the economy crashed in 2008. Circuit City and Borders also closed around this time. I wasn’t necessarily rolling in cash back then, so I didn’t partake too much in these Going Out Business sales. But MovieBuff801 made it out like a bandit, I think.

Yup, got quite a few things from a couple Blockbusters in my area. But the catch is, those Blu-Rays came in these DVD-sized cases, so they really stand out on the shelves amidst the regular Blu-Ray cases. Sweeney Todd was a Blu-Ray I got that way, but I just replaced that one with the recent 4K release of that, so now it's properly sized.
Also, I ended up either replacing for better cases or getting rid of quite a few of the movies I got that way anyway, so yeah.

I bought a bunch of empty Blu-Ray cases to solve a similar problem when I cleaned out a local video store last year. Was also able to make a special order from Criterion not just for cases but also covers.

I cleaned out a local video store last year. Whaaat?? Local place in Kingston held on for a long time until covid dealt it the deathblow. Shame. I didn't use it as much as I probably should have been in its last year it became pretty useful in getting a hold of footage for certain videos.

I can't even remember the last time I saw one in operation. Should have made a video about it. Like those folks that make pilgrimages to the last Blockbuster.
