The reactions from both sides looks exactly like it did 4 years ago if you just replace the word "republicans" with "democrats," so nothing new there. Liberals when George W. was President: He's a dictator! He's a racist! He's a white supremacist Our country is doomed! Conservatives when Obama was President: He's a socialist! He's going to create death panels and turn us into Soviet Russia! Liberals when Trump was President: He's a fascist! He's a racist! He's a white supremacist! He's going to destroy the world! Conservatives when Biden is President: He's a socialist! He's a stooge for the far left! He's going to turn us into Soviet Russia! Liberals when Nikki Haley is President: She's a racist! She's a white supremacist! She hates women!

Hillary Clinton didn't throw a press conference to say "They're cheating! Not FAIR! I wanted to win!"
So there's one difference right there.

But she did spend the next four years questioning the legitimacy of the 2016 election which she's done on several occasions. Liberals when Trump was President: He's a fascist! He's a racist! He's a white supremacist! He's going to destroy the world! Conservatives when Biden is President: He's a socialist! He's a stooge for the far left! He's going to turn us into Soviet Russia! K but Trump really is a racist and facist and Biden is most certainly not a socialist. He's a racist but I think the fact that he was beaten in a fair election and will be out of office when Biden is inaugurated kinda throws cold water on the notion that he's a fascist and a dictator.

Whether he'll be successful or not remains to be seen, but the effort is clearly there. There's also a litany of history scholars and professors who have written on Trump's fascist qualities. We shouldn't have to wait for him to install himself as President for life to call a spade a spade.

They're already starting to flee the sinking ship, just look up the post-election interviews with some prominent Republicans. Nevermind the Newt Gingrich's or Rudy Giuliani's, those guys have nothing to lose. I mean the Republicans who will be up for reelection in the coming election cycles. They're already trying to distance themselves as much as they possibly can.

I'm halfway convinced the reason Trump is claiming voter fraud is because he knows he has a lot of zombies and if he can get them even more riled up about losing the election right at the tip of losing it, he can cause more chaos for the incoming administration for them to deal with. He might be slyly encouraging violence even, but I don't want to project something so awful even though I don't see a soul in that man's eyes.
Though it probably did start with him refusing to accept reality and is snowballed from there.
I have no loyalty for Republican or Democrat. I watch each President with cautious optimism and mostly vote based on whether I feel they're doing good enough or not. With Trump my optimism was dashed very quickly and I became very passive to him as a President because he treated the job as a prize and not the civil service it was meant to be. Then this last year happened and he just kept making bad scenarios worse at every turn, and I have never wanted a President out of office so badly in my life. Then his press conference a few nights ago was the cherry on top of a shit sundae. Fuck Trump. He can just piss off.

He's spent the past five years building and establishing a fanatical following who will happily go along with anything he says, no matter how absurd. Actually being President would only get in the way of doing what he wants to do, which is hold rally after rally across the country. Thousands of worshipers hanging on his every word is what he lives for, and now he's got it. He can finally establish his own cable network or streaming service, which will be pushed as a political/news service, but in reality will be a 24/7 infomercial for his hotels, golf courses and all-new lines of overpriced merchandise.

They certainly thought he was a dumb warmonger (which he was) and that he was using post-9/11 patriotic fervor to do some rather worrying power grabs (so "dictator" might have come up occasionally) but it was hardly hysterical. Hell, people thought it was shocking and odd when Kanye West said "George Bush doesn't care about black people" in the wake of his massive Hurricane Katrina failures. Hell, his pre-9/11 presidency was downright genteel. He's a racist but I think the fact that he was beaten in a fair election and will be out of office when Biden is inaugurated kinda throws cold water on the notion that he's a fascist and a dictator. One, it remains to be seen how he'll behave in the next few months. Two, simply being incompetant does not mean you weren't an aspiring fascist dictator. If he were stepping down magnanimously instead of behaving like he is right now, then I'd maybe accept the idea that cold water is being thrown on the idea of his authoritarian aspirations.

If nothing else, I think he'll try and get The Apprentice off the ground again. I think if the ratings on it tank it will hurt his ego more than losing the election would.

I'm sure he'd love to have a show like The Apprentice again, but Trump didn't entirely own that show. He was one of the producers as well as the star, so he held a great deal of clout on the series, but most of the money went to other people/companies. Why go back to that when you can establish a rip-off version of The Apprentice on your own platform and keep all the money? All of his rallies can double as auditions for his new reality show.

If he were stepping down magnanimously instead of behaving like he is right now, then I'd maybe accept the idea that cold water is being thrown on the idea of his authoritarian aspirations. Well his pre-9/11 presidency was less than a year after he was inaugurated. However the post-9/11 anti-Bush fervor was absolutely hysterical. And this was during the dawn of social media. Racist, xenophobe, Islamaphobe, dictator, all the usual go-tos. I think Democrats believed they were justified because of how Republicans dragged Clinton through the mud because he banged chicks in the White House but the Bush hatred was evident for 6+ years. And I push back on the label of fascist for Trump, Obama or just about anyone from either side because we know what fascists are. I've personally known people who have fought actual, literal fascists and I bet other folks on these boards have known people of the same generation. The people we know would usually step up to fight those fascists around the time when the fascists would subjugate and systematically exterminate tens of millions of people. So when Trump comes out and says 'hey maybe I'll run for a third term' because he's an idiot and the media goes 'fascist!' it just makes them sound petty. If you want to call Trump a fascists for gumming up the works of this transfer of power you can, I think he aligns more with the 'thin-skinned dickhead' label more than 'fascist.' If he's truly a fascist then he's the worst, least successful fascist in history.

Bush was waging a staggering senseless war that everyone in retrospect seems to agree was a massive waste of lives, money, and American prestige. So, yeah, some of the rhetoric got a bit heated but I'd hardly say it was out of proportion. Combine that with certain excesses like the Patriot Act and I'd say some of the "paranoia" was more than justified. Meanwhile Obama presided over eight reasonably peaceful years and passed the Heritage Society's healthcare bill and the right wing responded by freaking out, drawing insane theories about creeping Stalinism on chalkboards, and then electing an internet troll to office. You don't have to like how Bush was treated, but spare me the bothsides-ism false equivalencies.

While I agree Trumpism arose partly from a lot of that rhetoric calling Bush-era Republicans racist, etc., Trump more than met that label during his time in office. I don't see any other way to describe his border policy (both Mexico and Muslim countries), or his response to the Black Lives Matters protests, or Charlottesville.
It's a stretch to call a McConnell a fascist, but he's certainly an enabler.
At this point it's semantics, whatever o don't care. I do hope that lessons are learned in what gave rise to Trumpism, but I want to get as much good policy in as quickly as possible. And that's going to have to involve getting younger progressives involved and engaged.

But as we've established no one was throwing invectives like that at Bush until he, you know, earned them. It was hardly instant or incessant until the dude started waging wars in the middle east.
