You could theoretically become president with 23% of the popular vote. Sounds good. I think I'll do it.

It's not arbitrary though, it's based on population.

It's not arbitrary though, it's based on population. It's not based on population, if it were we've have fifty equally large states. Instead we arbitrarily have nonsense like there being two Dakotas instead of one even though their combined population is less than that of the 39th most populous state, giving them four senators between them and four extra electoral votes. That's disproportionate representation baked into the system caused by whatever 19th century shenanigans led to the drawing of state borders. Why add even more nonsense to the stew?

I thought you meant in the sense of congressional districting. Well when it comes to land allotment I suppose it is but that cat's been out of the bag for a while however bringing up the Senate kind of demonstrates the point of the electoral college and what the people who started this whole thing wanted in the first place and that wasn't a simple majority rule. It's not just our voting, our whole legislative system is based checks and more checks focused on limiting the tyranny of the 50.1%. It's why our democracy isn't pure majority rule. To amend the Constitution for example requires 3/4s of the states and a congressional supermajority. Over the past couple years a lot of people have been saying 'how come New Hampshire gets the same number of senators as New York, that's not fair.' Yeah, that's the point, each state gets an equal and independent say regardless of their land size or population, it's not supposed to be 'fair.'
I think that people merely writing off the electoral college as unfair and archaic miss the point of why the electoral college was established in the first place and that the point of it was so we didn't has a simple majority vote.

If you text "USPS" to 50409, theres a bot that write form letters to your reps to save the postal service.
Took me about 60 seconds

Yes that was "the point" and it's also why the country is going to shit. There are so many checks and balances that nothing gets done, at least not when we're at this level of polarization. In the past there was at least some will to compromise and get things done but now we have one party that actively refuses to govern and endless inequality persists largely because a party that plainly doesn't represent the majority has inordinate power because America was arbitrarily divided so that there are like thirty states that no one lives in and the combined population of those state for whatever reason are willing to let things go to shit. The founders did not envision that. In the first presidential election the state with the most electoral votes had 12 electors and the state with the fewest had 3, now the state with the most electoral votes has 55 electors and multiple states have 3. There was supposed to be a slight bone thrown to the Rhode Islands of the world, not the massive inequality that's persisting now.

I understand, gridlock and inaction have been hallmarks of efficient and inefficient government and it can be frustrating no matter what side of the aisle you sit on and whether your guys are in power or not. I just don't think throwing the baby out with the bathwater would fix those problems and people tend to forget that when they try to change things up in their favor the door is going to swing back the other way before too long. Look at what happened with Harry Reid when he changed the Senate rule by getting rid of the filibuster for presidential appointments and set that precedent. 2 years later the Republicans swoop in and blow up the filibuster for Supreme Court and other judicial nominees. Many people would agree that hasn't worked out too well. Now Democrats are saying if they get the Senate back they might get rid of the filibuster altogether. Efficient? I suppose it is definitionally but I don't think anyone believes that it's made either party work together.

I suppose it is definitionally but I don't think anyone believes that it's made either party work together. Mitch fucking McConnell was going to roll back the filibuster regardless of whether Reid did anything, the only mistake Reid made was playing by the rules like a chump for the six years prior while the Republicans rolled him. And if we want any chance at doing anything to fix the broken healthcare system, the broken financial system, or save any hope of dialing back climate change they're not going to be able to let McConnell kill any and every idea until the end of time.

Gop votes for no structural platform. Will instead just support trump with whatever the fuck he says.
Being a republican is ridiculously embarrassing these days.
