I know we all expected bad things when Trump got elected. But honestly, did you expect his 4th year to be THIS bad?? Well, he was truly exposed to even the most moderate and independent of voters. He finally had full-blown crises to handle (he did manage to deal with several hurricanes a couple years ago and did so immensely poorly including Puerto Rico who I'm still convinced he doesn't believe is actually a part of the U.S.) with the coronavirus and these protests and he has failed at both miserably. He was always horrendous, but he got lucky because he was handed an economy already on the rise after Obama did the dirty work of undoing Bush's mess and then dealt with relatively very little situations other than ones he created himself (like detaining children at the border). Now that he's facing two of the most pivotal moments in American history, all at once, the whole world watches as he crumbles in every instance.

It's just so clear that he's unaware and uninterested in anything that's not directly related to him. American history? Nope. Foreign policy? Nope. Any desire to be more familiar with any of that? Nope.

I had at least the "comforting" suspicion that Trump would only be a one term president at most. But 2020 has been such a clusterfuck year, and with election campaigns being gutted by the COVID precautions and Biden being a somewhat weak candidate...I'm prepping myself for four more years nonsense.
I hope you all survive in the aftermath of the apocalypse. See you in the promise land. ::cocks shotgun and jumps out window::

I knew it would be bad, but he continues to shock me. It is wild that the man continues to find new lows. It feels like we should be past the point where things shock us, and yet, they still do.

It really is. Just when I think I've exhausted all my outrage and he can't possibly debase himself anymore, he tear gasses peaceful protestors to take one of the stupidest photo-ops in history. Seriously though, how ridiculous did he look holding up that bible? Clearly doesn't open it or any book for that matter that doesn't have pop-up pictures.

Trump needs pictures like that so that the religious right can more readily to lie to themselves about what he is, and what they've allowed themselves to become for the sake of political expediency.

Yup, instead of even attempting to offer hope and peace to the American people or words of remorse and reflection he decided, nah fuck it they're not voting for me anyways, I'm gonna pander to the die-hard lunatics that forget anything wrong I do as long as I remind them I'm a "Christian".

The Republicans of Iowa have finally decided not to nominate Steve King to run for Congress this year. Before you get to thinking that the people of his district have finally realized that sending a racist homophobe to Congress is a bad idea, not so fast. The most prominent reason King lost his primary run is because Congress stripped him of any authority, and thus can't get anything done for his district. Sending him back simply isn't productive, and while the Republican voters of his district may not care that he's a bigot, they're not willing to put themselves at a disadvantage just to stand in solidarity with him.
With any luck, he'll run as an independent and split the vote.

Question for folks, what do you hope for as the end goal of reform? Despote being fairly left-centrist, I try to follow a bunch of lefty discourse on Twitter, and Deray McKesson is getting dragged for apparently not going far enough with these 8 data-driven and actionable policy proposals:
I don't think that complete defund or abolishment of the police would ever realistically happen, and how does that get around stuff like who polices murder etc.?
If you want to take this to a separate thread, I'm all ears.

Complete defunding and abolishment of the police isn't happening and honestly isn't what we want anyways. We don't want anarchy, but we do want police officers to do their job responsibly and not target citizens.
In Los Angeles, Mayor Garcetti just slashed the budget for the LAPD significantly since it was outrageous that 54% of the city's budget was going to it. So I think that's the more likely scenario where we slash funds to the police and put them to better uses.

Give them licenses. If they have x amount of complaints they can't get renewed. They can't be cops anymore.
Also make them buy insurance against future law suits like doctors. Fuck up enough your insurance gets too high and you just can't afford to be a cop anymore. To help this increase the starting salary so they can pay for the insurance, will have better quality officers applying since they gotta be cool to keep their jobs.
All this talk if reform is necessary and of course there will be unforseen consequences to whatever they decide to enact. But something's gotta change.

So I think that's the more likely scenario where we slash funds to the police and put them to better uses. The solution is higher employment requirements and better training. If every cop were college educated, martial arts trained & passed psychology exams and were properly trained to deescalate, that would make a huge difference. Right now, the police force attracts & hires too many “bro’s” and those are the “bad apples” fucking up the whole batch.

We regulate financial industry with threats of jail/fines to individuals, superiors and institutions. Think we need the same here.
For one thing.

And for litigation any payments should come out of the unions pension fund.

The problem is that there's far more to the current level of injustice than just the "bad apples." Its the legions of others who enable those bad apples. A police officer who murders an unarmed man in the street should be immediately arrested, and yet they are not. Their fellow officers don't arrest them at all. The internal affairs department should be thoroughly investigating everything, yet all they ever seem to do is investigate the victim. The prosecutors office should be filing murder charges on these murderers, but they don't. They announce that they're not going to prosecute due to lack of evidence, and never mind that the reason there's no evidence is that the police didn't investigate their fellow officer the way they would anyone with dark skin. The city attorney's office should be addressing a lack of due diligence from any member of their staff, but they don't. They turn a blind eye for the sake of inter-departmental cooperation. City Hall should be dealing with department heads whose actions (or lack thereof) result in negative headlines, but they don't because they're all guilty of the same thing to some extent.
If you take away money from the police budget, then the police department will get rid of all the most recent hires, and maintain the status quo for the old guard who's in charge of everything. Keep patrol cars for a few years longer than they'd prefer. Same with any other part of the corruption machine that is local government.
The only thing that can put an end to all this nonsense is the one thing every voter hates to hear- Big Government. An outside, federal agency who doesn't answer to anyone in local government must have authority in all police misconduct matters. They shouldn't have to wait until the state requests their assistance. Any time a police officer has to be investigated, it should be done at the federal level. All local internal affairs departments should be eliminated.

Youd have to write it into legislation to make that org immune to partisan gutting from the next Trump.
