I liked Neon Genesis back in high school when I first watched it. Then again I was an angsty teen, so maybe I identified.

For example: you can't kill off certain characters because you need them to advance the plot or keep it on track.

So... I've been watching Free! on crunchyroll. Its surprisingly engaging beyond its reverse harem/fanservice/sports persona. It's even a bit clever with its tropes. And they got a lot of the details of swimming freakishly precise.
Nothing groundbreaking and very much the opposite of what I usually watch, but hey its been fun.

Gen Urobuchi created it, Hiroyuki Sawano is doing the music And it's directed by the guy so did Fate/Zero....I'm interested.

I'm kind of mixed on Aldnoah. Inaho is one of the least interesting protagonists in any anime I've watched. However, Slaine is pretty compelling. To me there's a lot better stuff on the air.

Two that are continuing from last season and just about to wrap up are Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, a heart-breaking tale of a classical musician trying to put his life back together with the help of violinist he just met. The other 2cour is Shirobako (probably my favorite show this season), a brilliant series following the daily grind of working in the anime industry. It's daunting at first due to how many characters they throw at you in the first couple of episodes, but if you stick with it it's incredibly rewarding. Out of the ones that premiered this season, I'd say Junketsu no Maria is probably the best, followed by Death Parade and Yoru no Yatterman (has the perfect first episode). |
