It is killing me that Texas is enough of a disaster that it would be in bad taste to make fun of them for being absolute pussies about what are, from my perspective, extremely mild winter conditions because good god would it have been fun to laugh at people for complaining about temperatures in the 30s when I've just gotten through two weeks of temperatures well below zero.

Here in Oklahoma, my power has gone out twice in the past 3 days, and they even had had rolling blackouts yesterday to try to decrease demand on the grid. So much for our overabundant supply of oil and natural gas.

My work notified me on Monday that we were closed until Thursday, at which point we'd see what happens. It's supposed to snow again tonight, so I won't be surprised if I've got the entire week off. What's really crazy is that I'm totally off. I'm not working from home. The powers that be don't seem to have adapted to the current state of affairs entirely, just yet.

I think the main thing that's throwing so many people off is just that it's been so long since this has happened. It's been six years since this has happened in D/FW, but it's certainly not the first time ever. The metroplex was frozen in when we hosted the Superbowl in 2011, too. While it's been nice to not have to go to work this week, it hasn't all been relaxing. There was a water main break near my house on Monday. It was fixed today. I had enough water stored up in two liter bottles to drink and cook with. I couldn't shower, and I was melting snow to fill the toilet tank. Unpleasant. |
