I just got back from Las Vegas and I'm really bummed I have to cook for myself again. We ate at Tom Colicchio's Heritage Steak and it was EASILY the best steak I've ever had. The charred octopus was also amazing. I wanted to take pictures, but I didn't want to whip my phone out to take a picture because the restaurant was really nice. Another surprising highlight was the Haute Doggery. BF and I split two dogs and some fries. The dog on the left is their california dog (steamed turkey dog, avocado, tomato, cucumber, sprouts and Russian dressing) and on the right is called the rising sun (grilled Kobe beef frank, crispy yam, nori furikake, teriyaki glaze, spicy mayo and tempura avocado)

Going out to eat always makes me question dating a Vegan... she can't eat anywhere.
Does make Valentine's easy to plan though.

Yeah I couldn't go Vegan myself. I'm an omnivore.

My gf is vegan. There's so much good veggie shit out there these days that it's not even an issue. And she makes the meanest veggie Thai green curry.

So I had my first attempt at pan frying filet mignon tonight. I wrapped some bacon around them, seasoned with salt and pepper, and cooked 2 at a time at about 8 minutes on each side, as they were pretty thick. I preheated the pan for about 3 minutes at medium heat with 2 tbs of butter and some shredded garlic. I didn't add any oil cause I figured they would also fry in the bacon fat, which they did. I took some of the extra uncooked bacon I had, diced it up, added some garlic and butter, and sauteed some mushroom to top the beef and the rice, which I had in the rice cooker with broccoli and carrots in the steam tray.
I must say everything turned out pretty good. I was able to feed 4 for under $30. Costco has great prices on meat. Highly recommended,

Nilade liked my post about my gf being a great chef 2 days after we split up.
That's cold, man.
I know we had Movie Stills beef in recent times but I didn't think you'd resort to Ian-esque levels. Our war just escalated, motherfucker!
Unless you haven't been reading the shoutbox, in which case you are forgiven and our conflict remains at DEFCON 2.

Sorry to hear that man. As for the Still Game, you've earned your victory. I don't know what happened, but I've become so much worse on obvious stills. But don't worry, I haven't given up. Btw, I disliked the post.

I'm just messing with you buddy. I wanted out of the relationship so it's actually a positive! My stills performance is literally all about the correct search engine text 50% of the time, I haven't seem a lot of the stuff Duke posts, especially the recent ones, but I know how to describe them.

Sounds Great Nilade. I just broiled a couple of pieces of swordfish (and finished them off in the nuker becuse they were still under done in the middle). Seasoned with Old Bay and a drizzle of teriyaki, with a splash of lemon at the table. Man I love swordfish - Trader Joe's has good vacuum packed swordfish, I bought some in Shaw's because I didn't want to go to the fish counter but those were tough - Joe's is very tender and convenient - but ultimately the best is from the fishmonger.

Today I'm making bbq in the crock pot. It's only been in for an hour and the house already smells great. I had to ditch my brown sugar earlier this week, so I just sort of skipped it. We'll see how it turns out.

Should be ok. You can always try to sweeten it up later, maybe putting some regular sugar (or something else sweet) on them under the broiler for a few minutes? Depends really upon what your other ingredients are and what style BBQ sauce you like. Sugar is really the thing that caramelizes the surface of the meat but you don't really get caramelization in a crock pot. BBQ is sometimes cooked in two stages - the slow cook, and the finishing sear as I said above. BBQ usually tastes good no matter what you do to it.
Once my ground pork thaws out today I think I'm going to try gnocchi in meat sauce. Never had gnocchi before.

My bbq sauce is inspired by (aka I can't be bothered to dig up the recipe each time, so I just wing it) a recipe that my mom gave me a while ago. The bbq sauce consists of tomato sauce, yellow mustard, cider vinegar, worchestershire sauce, brown sugar, paprika, salt and pepper.
I went out and got some brown sugar after I posted and just tossed a handful into the crock pot.

Yeah basically - Tomato sauce, mustard, vinegar, brown sugar, and spices. Smoked paprika is wonderful. I like my sauce sweet and spicy so I'd probably put in chili peppers, garlic & onion, Apple Cider vinegar, pineapple, maybe molasses, and probably a spicy mustard, and either soy sauce or Worcestershire or both - I also add basil or oregano to most of my tomato based sauces - maybe even sage. Mix it together and put it in a sauce pan for a little while to let it thicken and reduce.

Something is wrong with my camera - it says battery depleted even after I put in new ones.
I wish you could see this dish - I made a big pot of ground pork, roasted peppers and onions, and mushrooms with gnocchi in marinara.
I hope it tastes half as good as it looks and smells
EDIT - oh man, it does!!!!!!!!!! My mouth is happy

I still don't know if I'm getting the hang of the Crock Pot cooking. I cooked a pork roast with pineapple, carrot, peas, red bell pepper, and onions, added garlic, shallots, and some spices that go good with pineapple.
Came out ok, but I think I'd rather cook it in the oven next time - it was like pulled pork but a little stringy.
Right now I'm just sitting back with some African coffee - it was the least expensive on the shelf so I thought I'd give it a go - nice tasting, I'd buy it again.

The Crock Pot is just a terrible thing. Aside from making Corned Beef I never use mine. Just makes everything a singular tasting mush.

It's also good for Pot Roast, but yeah the veggies were kind of mushy in this dish

Last night I made something tasty. Here's how I made it:
Marinate 1/2 block of tofu in mixture of soy sauce, grated ginger and chopped garlic for several hours
Cut up 1/2 red bell pepper, 4-5 mushrooms and 2 carrots and toss into a skillet and cook until veggies are soft.
Add the tofu and remaining marinade to veggies. Add additional soy sauce and grated ginger if desired.
In a separate container dump a bag of rice sticks (noodles) into some warm water to soften.
Combine everything and enjoy!

I dried out my block before marinating it so it absorbed as much flavor as possible. Soy sauce + a massive chunk of ginger root + garlic + tofu = tasty tasty tofu

Made an apple filled puff pastry roll (apples, butter, Splenda, cinnamon, and freshly grated nutmeg rolled into premade puff pastry and baked at 400 for about 30 minutes - after sauteing the filling on the stove top)
And I forgot to look at the carb count lol - my blood sugar was almost 300 the next morning when it should be down around 100 - lol at least it was good.

I've successfully made egg in a hole for breakfast two days in a row. Bad part is that if you don't have the right bread you can't even get the egg to combine with it while your cooking.
