-- Did every action scene need to be a memberberry? Here's a great idea: create a new soundtrack.
-- Black don't crack and Paul Reiser has Mad About You money. Hate to see what age has done to Taggart and Billy Rosewood. Their faces look like plastic that melted in the sun. They look so awful they had to bring in Joseph Gordon Levitt to pal around with Eddie Murphy.
-- So what happened to Brandon T. Jackson from the failed Beverly Hills Cop TV pilot?
-- So if the daughter is 32, that means she was alive during the events of Beverly Hills Cop III. Who is the mom? Did they get free passes to Wonder World? Did they meet George Lucas??
-- So for the script of this movie, did they just merge the plots of part 1 (smuggling drugs), part 2 (person in peril) and part 3 (corrupt cops)? A.I. could have done better.
-- When they cast Luis Guzman, did they know he wouldn't get off his seat?
-- Good job ending the movie with a shootout. That's keeping up with tradition.
-- I made sure to give this movie a thumbs down. Fuck your algorithm.

they had to bring in Joseph Gordon Levitt to pal around with Eddie Murphy. I like JGL, he's a good actor and he seems like a pleasant fellow. My lord he's the same in every movie. He doesn't have any standout features like Eastwood or Pacino but I feel most of the time he's just playing himself. Same applies here. -- So for the script of this movie, did they just merge the plots of part 1 (smuggling drugs), part 2 (person in peril) and part 3 (corrupt cops)? A.I. could have done better. It's the Bill & Ted Face The Music writing method. Can't think of an idea for a sequel? Just Frankenstein the other installments into one feature and call it a day. Although I would much rather watch Axel F again than Bill & Ted 3. -- When they cast Luis Guzman, did they know he wouldn't get off his seat? If it's good enough for Steven Seagal, it's good enough for Luis Guzman. -- Good job ending the movie with a shootout. That's keeping up with tradition. Ending the movie with a shootout in a mansion no less. The only thing missing was Mike Ehrmantraut.

Under Siege 3 starring Seagal & Guzman. -- Good job ending the movie with a shootout. That's keeping up with tradition. At least John Landis ended Part 3 at an amusement park.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not the biggest Beverly Hills Cop guy. The first two are fine and entertaining enough, and that third movie is garbage. So, the prospect of a legacy sequel/fourth film in this franchise never really moved the needle for me, and the final result that is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F pretty much justifies my ambivalence. Not that I found this movie to be terrible -- I'll give it this, it's a better movie than Beverly Hills Cop III -- but neither is it one that ever really elicits any feeling of passion. I won't accuse it of lack of trying, because much like the recent Bad Boys films, I will say that Axel F takes the same approach of re-establishing its main character within the current times and this phase of his life that does feel honest. It's just that I didn't find the results here as effective. In fact, Axel F is mostly held back by an overall feeling of blandness. The humor and jokes are...mostly fine, I guess. Chuckleworthy most of the time, with a few genuine laughs here and there, but nothing that felt like it truly hit the way as intended. But the blandness seems to mostly come from first-time feature director Mark Molloy, who's clearly just a gun for hire here. Not that the Beverly Hills Cop movies have ever been auteur-driven pieces -- although, Tony Scott brought a lot of style to II -- but, man, at least they had energy when it counted (the first two, at least). Molloy's style is more workmanlike, with no real flair for the action or a tight sense of pacing -- something crucial for a comedy. This movie runs almost two hours, and it feels it a lot. On the plus side, I wouldn't say the actors are phoning it in. Murphy, Joseph Gordon Levitt and the rest of the cast do feel like they're trying, but the material being given to them is average at best. And that's pretty much how I'd describe Axel F as a whole. Not so bad or good that it's memorable; it's just kinda there.
