I knew someone referred to as the fire master… but not for ghost capturing reasons.
Let’s give a slow clap to the makers of Ghostbusters. It took… how many sequels?
Here, we follow the natural progression of the Ghostbusters world building. They know how to capture ghosts. They’ve conquered evil. But… have they… learned… to understand the ghosts? Have they… studied them? There’s some great concepts explored here and I do hope they continue on that path. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie is the usual stuff. I didn’t mind it. Baby steps. I’m glad the franchise is where it needs to be.

I saw a billboard for this a couple days ago and realized I had completely forgotten about this movie. Glad to hear that it's worth watching at the very least.

Has a 45% on RT so best to watch Dune again instead. These are the same critics that gave Lady Ghostbusters a 74%. You can’t trust critics when it comes to Ghostbusters. They gave Afterlife a 64%. You’re gonna tell me with a straight face that Afterlife is worse than Lady Ghostbusters?? C’mon, Sno. You’re better than this. The audience score for Afterlife was 94%. If you’re among that 94%, you’ll like this too. It’s the same Spielbergian take on Ghostbusters as Afterlife, but with Ivan Reitman’s passing, it seems like Dan Aykroyd has taken more creative control of the franchise. He has a substantial supporting role in the movie and the whole concept behind the movie is closer to what Aykroyd originally wanted to do with Ghostbusters. They turned Ernie Hudson’s character into a corporate world hotshot that’s bankrolling a ghost research facility. The lab has a staff, creates new weapons, has new containment units and study ghosts. One of the new characters is a ghost trying to reunite with her family in the “next world.” In true Aykroyd fashion, they try to give a scientific explanation for heaven. This might not be the sarcastic Bill Murray comedy some people are yearning for, but I’m okay with this take on Ghostbusters. There’s more sequel potential if they lean into the science. Maybe Steven Spielberg is what Ghostbusters needed after all.

2016 Ghostbusters was the wheel that broke Rotten Tomatoes. If anyone might have suspected that movie critics could have a bias, agenda or would use their own opinions to influence their reviews then the reviews for that movie removed all doubt.

Aftermath got 94%. Lady Ghostbusters, which predates verified ratings, sits at 49%. IMDb is at 6.6/10 Letterboxd is at 2.9/4 Afterlife was … IMDb — 7.0/10 Letterboxd — 3.1/4 Lady Ghostbusters … IMDb — 6.8/10 Letterboxd — 2.3/4 Don’t know what to tell you, Doomsday.

I was entertained by the conversation surrounding Ghostbusters 2016 more than anything having to do with the actual movie. I can't remember the last time an actual movie studio and cadre of film critics around the world declared war on an entire audience of ticket buyers. Unfortunately most people don't like to be guilted into seeing a movie, especially when it's not very good.

I can't remember the last time an actual movie studio and cadre of film critics around the world declared war on an entire audience of ticket buyers. Unfortunately most people don't like to be guilted into seeing a movie, especially when it's not very good. That's not an entirely fair framing of what happened. Let's not pretend their wasn't a plethora of Youtubers pumping out videos about how feminism killed Ghostbusters and SJWs were ruining fandoms. Critics may have stepped into the culture war surrounding the movie but they certainly didn't create it. And that style of online media has proven very influential. There's an entire subgenre of Youtuber who've built their careers on complaining about wokeness killing Hollywood, from The Quartering to Geeks & Gamers to Nerdrotic to Neverending's boy The Critical Drinker. Yeah, the studio's marketing was cynical and the movie sucked, and there were also likely critics who championed the film more for political reasons than artistic ones, but there was absolutely a wave of toxicity and misogyny that shrouded the film for months before release. I also think it's a bit silly to complain about reviewers being biased and opinionated given a review is literally an opinion piece. Subjectivity comes with the territory. I'm also not sure why we're rallying around audience scores as if that's a remotely reliable metric. The Daily Wire's movie Lady Ballers has an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Should we all reassess our 2023 Top Tens? And just for the record, I'd put Ghostbusters 2016 above Afterlife. Both films suck ass, but the former is just a shitty comedy. It did not try to pull at my heartstrings by parading around Harold Ramis's corpse.

Should we all reassess our 2023 Top Tens? 89% of its audience liked the movie. Meaning that 11% of Daily Wire viewers didn’t like the movie. Who are these 11%? Can we reach out to them? Would love to know their thoughts on the movie. Frozen Empire has only been out for a day and a half. Pretty much only the fans of Ghostbusters would have rushed out to see it. SnoBorderZero threw the critics score at Doomsday as if Doomsday forgot about the 2016 movie. I think Doomsday would rather know what fans think. 87% (less than Afterlife’s 94%) paints a better picture for him. There’s also the IMDb and Letterboxd ratings to add more context. Across the board, it seems like fans liked this one less than Afterlife. Is it because it’s an objectively worse movie (as critics seem to think) or because Frozen Empire went on a different route than Afterlife? I don’t think Doomsday cares either way, but audience ratings (at least verifiable ones) have their merit.

I saw Afterlife. It was as useless a reboot as it gets. Escapes the brain the moment the credits roll.
I didn't see the 2016 Ghostbusters. Don't intend to.

There were definitely people on youtube talking smack, I just can't remember the last time a studio mobilized in order to publicly rip random people who were criticizing their movie before it even came out. Sony vs. YouTubers was always a silly matchup, like why waste the time? Why not try to make people want to watch your movie? Lots of people have been harpooning Star Wars for years (look at Acolyte discussion over the past 24 hours) but as far as I'm aware Disney executives haven't come out and said 'First off, misogyny.' And I remember at the time reading a number of the Ghostbusters reviews, both good and bad, and it was very odd that almost every single positive review started off mentioning 'feminism' or 'toxic masculinity' and relegating anything having to do with the actual movie to 4 paragraphs later. There was clearly an agenda on the part of mainstream critics, probably because of the backlash to the trailer, but at the end of the day its such a strange hill to die on. Richard Roeper said how bad it was and people laid into him. Why? Like how did a Ghostbusters movie become this battle of Salamis? There had been race and gender swapped movies for years prior, there have been a ton since and the online vitriol if anything has only gotten worse but nothing has been a lightning rod quite like Ghostbusters was. But any fair minded person will acknowledge it was terrible, it lost money albeit because of its bloated cost and not due to lack of ticket sales, and it was quickly swept under the rug and replaced by a movie featuring the characters that fans had wanted in the first place. Ghostbusters 2016 fought. Ghosbusters 2016 lost.
