When I joined IMDb in the late 1990's, The Godfather was #1 on their Top 250 list. That made sense to me. Fast-forward to now and it's The Shawshank Redemption. That doesn't make sense to me. I watched Shawshank when it premiered on cable television, and although I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was anything special. It reminded me too much of Cool Hand Luke, Papillon, Escape From Alcatraz and even Midnight Express to some extent. To me, it just seemed like a cliche' prison drama and never bothered to re-watch it... until now. 2014 is the 20th anniversary of Shawshank and it seemed like a good opportunity to re-visit the movie. Overall, my opinion hasn't changed much. I still see it as a textbook prison drama. But I understand the appeal. It's a story about hope and maintaining one's dignity during the darkest of times. Those are noble themes to explore and Frank Darabont does a wonderful job of executing them. But this is a movie that's supposed to be better than The Godfather and I don't think Hallmark style storytelling is good enough to do the job. B+ says me and not DoomsdayAnd yes, I realize I've given higher ratings to sillier movies but those don't have the expectation of being the greatest movie of all-time. Shawshank is the new Citizen Kane: good but SUPER overrated.

This movie aint no "Citizen Kane", that's not fair to Orson "Bowling Ball" Welles, Mr. Neverending. This is a crowd pleaser, but it's a crowd pleaser done extremely well. I haven't watched it in awhile, but I do really enjoy this movie. I think the only thing that hinders it is IMDB with its idiot posters that boost this to number 1. And I mean let's get real, this isn't even a top 200 movie of all time let alone number 1. I remember giving it a 9, but it's been a long time I've seen it so maybe I wouldn't rate it so high on a second viewing, but it's definitely very good at the least.

this isn't even a top 200 movie I wouldn't put it in my Top 100 or even rank it among the best of 1994, but I would consider Top 200.

What makes you think we can't love it without recognizing other films are better?

What makes you think we can't love it without recognizing other films are better? Because... you immediately shot me down without acknowledging the IMDb rating.

Shawshank is one of my favorite movies. Number 1? No. Top 100? Yes.

Top 100, in the history of film? Absolutely not. I would probably retract my statement of top 200, it probably belongs somewhere in there. But it's a very well told story with great acting, other than that I don't see how it redefines anything or is unique technical-wise in any way. That's not top 100 material.
