As long as it's true to the novel I'm definitely in.

I've been holding off on watching the show until I finished the book which I'm slowly whittling through. At least for me, I'm less motivated to bomb through a 1,160 page book than I am a book that's 200 or 300 pages and can plow through if I buckle down. I'm maybe 40% of the way through and it's great but I still have hundreds of pages to go and sometimes I'll get through a chunk, get busy, put it down for a while then pick it back up again. If the show is half as good as the book is though it should still be fantastic.

I've been really enjoying this so far. FX really knows how to do these historical fiction dramas well.
New episode tonight.

Oh cool, they're making a season 2 to a 'limited' series that has exhausted all source material. I see nothing but greatness coming from this decision.

Wait, so that's how the book ends? Because the whole time watching the finale I was thinking there's no way any of this actually ends and we're heading straight into season two.

The book ends on kind of a vague note. Toranaga has a narration where he explains what destinies await him and Blackthorne. He says how it's Blackthorne's fate to never leave Japan and to build a new life there as a shipmaker and that it's Toranaga's fate to one day become Shogun (he never actually becomes Shogun in the book). Then there's a paragraph saying how Toranaga defeated Ishido in battle. I suspect it may have been written like that as James Clavell was supposedly made to make some hefty edits to bring the page count down but either way the first season went through pretty much the entire book.

Finally got around to starting this, and am three episodes in. I'm hooked.
