They Cloned Tyrone - Review Thread

The shadow of Get Out seems to grow longer and longer every year. The latest movie that seems to have been made in its wake is They Cloned Tyrone, which isn’t really a horror movie and is more like an attempt to take Jordan Peele’s brand of absurdist social satire and apply it to something akin to a dark high concept science fiction thriller like Soylent Green or The Stepford Wives. The film also seems to be borrowing certain aesthetic elements from blacksploitation which is perhaps a bit of a curious choice. That genre doesn’t really have a visual aesthetic of its own beyond funky music, dated 70s fashion choices, and the general look of low budget movies from that era and those are all kind of hard things to really modernize. The particular movie takes a while to get going and I wasn’t too into it when it was spinning its wheels at the beginning but was at least somewhat intrigued when it finally showed its hand with a “what’s going on here” revelation at about the mid-point, but the resulting movie might have been better served as an hour long “Black Mirror” episode than as a feature length movie. Add to that some kind of middling execution like it’s overly dark cinematography and the resulting movie doesn’t quite do it for me. There is however enough food for thought in the premise and enough witty moments along the way to make the film at least worth a watch.
