"Marvel, they have their thing and there’s a certain formula to it all which seems to still be working," Burton told Yahoo Movies while promoting his new film ‘Big Eyes’. "But how many times can you say ‘you’re wearing a funny costume’ with the tights and stuff? That’s been going on for 20 years now. Yes, we all know that superheroes are damaged individuals. Maybe we need to see a happy superhero?" Marvel Studios released 10 superhero films over the last 6 years and recently announced it has 11 more on the way between now and 2019. Burton’s 1989 ‘Batman’ was the first superhero film to enjoy any substantial success at the the box office after ‘Superman III & IV’ spectacularly tanked. His dark and adult approach to the Dark Knight changed the public’s perception of the genre opening it up to a much wider audience, paving the way for the glut of superhero films we have today. Burton and Michael Keaton were originally set to make a third ‘Batman’ film together after ‘Batman Returns’ but but both pulled out after the studio insisted on a more mainstream direction. He says that the modern superhero films are so dark now, his look gaudy in comparison. "I remember ‘Batman’ getting so much flak and criticism at the time for being too dark and now 20-30 years later, it now looks like a light-hearted romp, it’s such a strange thing to go through."And he hasn't ruled out a return to the genre in the future, but he thinks the public appetite could run out before he got the chance. "I think there is [another superhero film in me], but I don’t know. You think we need more superhero movies? It keeps on going. It’s amazing how long it’s been going for and it just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Some day people will get sick of it."Tim Burton’s ‘Big Eyes’ starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz is coming to cinemas on 26 December.

Well I don't disagree with him, I'm tired of all these superhero films too but casual audiences just can't get enough. I'm eager for them to phase out as well, but I don't think it'll be anytime soon unfortunately.

Meh, I don't personally like them. But I do find myself pretty envious sometimes of those who do. They're spoiled. We had to do without any decent superhero movies for most of the history of cinema. We're not spoiled, just making up for lost time. |

I think it will be a while before I'm personnely tired of all the superhero movies. For as long as I can remember I've wanted to see my favorite on the big screen. Marvel definitely found a way to make that worth while. I'd love to see Burton do another superhero movie.

Jackson, and Burton both miss the concept and appeal and just cannot fathom Marvels success working. All the movies in the Phase 1 and 2 sets have all made money. And yet they are made with substance and that is rare reward for movie fans.

I don't think Jackson or Burton give a shit, they've made their own material and been successful without solely relying on franchises. How many of these filmmakers have their own style? Is Joss Whedon a good filmmaker? No, he's not. He just does what the studio tells him to do, he can be replaced in a second. These movies are all the same, the next Avengers movie will be the same thing as the first. They follow a formula that appeals to everyone and where you won't have to think during the film. Boring. Those movies were fun when I was 10, but I'm not amused by loud noises and run-of-the-mill action sequences anymore when that's all the film has to offer.

When was the last time Peter Jackson made something that wasn't an adaptation of a book or pre-existing franchise? The last eight movies he made were either about Middle-Earth, King Kong, or The Lovely Bones. The last original film he made was The Frighteners back in 1996. No disrespect to Jackson necessarily, but the last thing he has made is a career based on original material. I agree that he used to be known for that kind of stuff, but that was 20 years ago now. |

That's true, but he's already demonstrated he's more than capable of making original material and placing his own stamp on his work. He didn't get the Lord of the Rings job because of "The Frighteners", he got it from "Heavenly Creatures" and the zany horror flicks he made prior. Jackson and Burton aren't exactly at the top tier of filmmakers, but they both have a signature style. Peter Jackson isn't likely to make anything as oddball as "Bad Taste" or "Meet the Feebles" today, but he's more than capable of doing something original. Right now you're definitely right, he has only been dabbling in big name franchises (in fact I believe his next project is the 2nd TinTin film, not sure if anyone wants it but we're getting it) but a lot of filmmakers do that once they have the money and creative freedom to do what they want. I think it's good for Jackson to remove himself from Middle-Earth for awhile and reestablish himself with some smaller features. He's a very talented filmmaker, and he and Burton are leagues better than any of these yes man directors making Marvel movies.

Considering the dismal box office reception Tim Burton's new film Big Eyes got this weekend, he might want to give somebody at WB a call about doing one of the movies on the DC slate. He's in need of another hit, and these goofy stories that he finds so compelling keep failing to find an audience. The last hit Burton had was Alice in Wonderland, and he only made that so Disney would agree to produce a feature version of his short film Frankenweenie, which Disney owned the rights to.

The last hit Burton had was Alice in Wonderland. You make it sound like that was a million years ago. "Alice" was only 4 years ago and it paved the way for "Oz" and "Maleficent" which were big hits for Disney. He still has street cred. And with Michael Keaton back in the spotlight, and a top contender for Best Actor at the Academy Awards, "Beetlejuice 2" has become a top priority for Warner Bros. If all goes well, the movie should be in theaters by 2017 or `18. Burton is currently making "Miss Peregrine" with Eva Green which has a March 2016 release date. |

And who's not bored of the Tim Burton movie formula? Tim Burton might be the "godfather" of movies like Dick Tracy (1990) and Steel (1997) but the superhero movies made since the turn of the centaury is a different kettle of fish.

Tim Burton's 3rd Batman movie is Batman Forever without the camp. That's why he has a producer's credit in the movie. He worked on the original script with Lee Batchler and Janet Scott-Batchler. Then, when Joel Schumacher was hired to direct, he brought in Akiva Goldsman to camp the movie. Although, sadly, most of Burton's work ended up on the cutting room floor |

Does Batman keep Man-Bat in the back room of his cave? What the hell was that? Did Scarecrow pop up in a deleted scene and spray him with fear toxin? Is that why he's hallucinating giant bats? I assume it's not just a native giant bat that show up from time to time in the comics because it should be attacking him and not just flapping it's wings in his face. Why not a regular sized bat or a cloud of bats like in Batman Begins? I see why this was cut from the movie but why was it filmed? To quote the Riddler, who was quoting Bruce but sounds crazier when saying it, "It just raises to many questions." |
