Given the involvement of director David Lowery, you would think Peter Pan & Wendy would at least leave a lasting impression, but no, the fact that it turns out to be a nothingburger of a movie is honestly kind of surprising. Well...maybe not so much when you consider the majority of Disney's track record when it comes to their animated-to-live-action adaptations, and also the fact that I personally didn't care so much for Lowery's 2016 Pete's Dragon adaptation. But considering the fact that this movie was apparently a passion project of Lowery's, the final product feeling fairly devoid of passion honestly IS a surprise. Because this film seems to lack one of the main ingredients required to make a Peter Pan adaptation work: magic. Throughout its running time, I can't recall ever feeling a sense of magic or whimsy, despite how technically proficient it all was. True to Lowery's style, there IS a sense of brooding-ness that pervades a lot of this movie, but it really doesn't do anything to illuminate this story or these characters in a new light. It just feels like a slightly darker take on the tale just cause, and even then, it still doesn't go too far. So, it mainly occupies this awkward middleground where it's trying to be a new take, but still including aspects of the original, and those two approaches don't go together. It also doesn't help that Alexander Molony is pretty wooden as Peter, and thus fails to make an impression. On the other hand, Jude Law does give it his all as Captain Hook and if there's any part of this movie where the "David Lowery-ness" of it all works, it's him. But above all else, Peter Pan & Wendy just feels so unnecessary (big shock, I know). It's not so much that it's a cynical cash grab, because it's not. More like it's an effort that's in vain, because it fails to really justify its existence, so watching it is just sort of like homework. I still remember the live-action 2003 Peter Pan adaptation, but this one seems bound to fade into distant memories, much like grown-up Peter's Neverland memories in Hook, aka the superior Peter Pan update in every way, shape and form.

Peter Pan & Wendy(7/19/2023) Disney’s live action remakes are something to be looked at with suspicion at the best of times and doubly so when they’re being sent directly to Disney+ but I must say I did hold out some hope for this one if only because it was directed by David Lowery, a serious filmmaker who had been behind the 2016 Pete’s Dragon which is the one of these movies most people agree is relatively dignified. I also thought that maybe the direct to Disney+ nature of this meant that it could be smaller and riskier than some of the rest of these. Well, that was mostly for naught. Looked at as the new David Lowery movie this is a crushing disappointment. Looked at as a Direct-to-Disney+ live action remake separate from those expectations and it is… well I guess it’s in “it could be worse” territory. You can see some traces of a more interesting adaptation here and there in elements of the film’s visual style, the cast is mostly fine, and it also has a fairly interesting climactic setpiece on a flying pirate ship that I appreciated a little. But beyond that this has much bigger problems… including the fact that it’s a remake of Peter Pan, which is one of Disney’s weakest “animated classics” to begin with and frankly Peter Pan is just generally a bad story that leads to bad adaptations: Hook is also bad, Pan was reportedly a disaster, I don’t hear great things about the 2003 adaptation… it’s just a story they need to leave behind. If you must see a version of the Peter Pan story made by an indie director a better movie to check out is Benh Zeitlin’s Wendy which is a lot closer to what I was maybe hoping David Lowery could do with this property and basically the only version of this story I’ve seen that’s even remotely salvageable. As for this one, well a lot of it is still taken from the Disney movie so it’s redundant in that way, but unlike Disney’s other live action remakes this doesn’t even have particularly good production values and the effects for the Tinkerbelle stuff in it looks particularly bad, bordering on unprofessional. It’s certainly not as bad as something like Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio but that’s a pretty low bar to clear. ** out of Five

I remember enjoying the 2003 version, I thought it was generally well liked but then again…it’s been 20 years.

I also remember liking the 2003 movie, particularly Jason Isaacs' performance as Captain Hook.

Finding Neverland, for damn sure. I think we were the only two that defended that movie. That and the Pirates sequels.
