Instead of Elysium, they should have called it ObamaCare: The Movie. If you haven't seen it, and you probably haven't, it's about the 22nd century when Earth is such a mess that rich people leave the planet and go live in a space ship. And when Matt Damon, the only white guy left on Earth, gets sick/injured at his job, he does everything he can to get to that space ship and get medical treatment. Like District 9, the other movie by the same director, Elysium is kind-of silly, but it means well and is a lot of fun to watch. I think it's better than Oblivion, the other 2013 sci-fi movie that people ignored.

I like it, too, but probably not more than Oblivion.

Liked both Elysium and Oblivion. Why did they have to fight?

Liked both Elysium and Oblivion. Why did they have to fight? I like Oblivion too. But one movie is clearly better than the other. Although neither one is better than Gravity.

In terms of Sci-Fi? That's debatable.
But again...why must they fight?

At it core Gravity is a survival film that examines the will of the human spirit. Movies like Elysium and Oblivion examine humanity's role in a broader scope with it's relationship in regards to advancements in technology and changing environmental/societal elementals.

I don't think I would describe Elysium as hard sci-fi either. It's a pretty straight-forward action movie with cliche' sci-fi tropes thrown in.

Also, Elysium seemed weirdly short for the story it had. It's a movie that's, what, 98 minutes? And it's noticeably so. Now, I'm not saying it needed to be 2 1/2 hours or anything, but I still think the story could've benefitted from a bit more screentime and thus, more development. There's nothing wrong with a movie having a shorter running time, but there's a difference between good pacing and rushing, and as much as I liked it, I remember thinking Elysium felt rushed.

Elysium was not good people. Its action was shoddily shot, the villain (sharlto copley is it?) was absolutely ridiculous and one of the worst performances i've seen in a while. I was really excited for this and it was a massive letdown.

You Canadians have free health care, so the movie is like - whatever - to you guys. It's like if some third world country made a movie about McDonald's we wouldn't think much about it.
