It’s alright. It’s just endless references to the video games. At least the 1993 movie tried to do something interesting and tell some sort of coherent story. Yeah, go ahead SnoBorderZero, fight me. Mario and Luigi are starting out a plumbing business. One day, while on a job, they run into some pipes that transport them to another universe in which Bowser is trying to capture Princess Peach. Luigi gets himself captured and pretty much does nothing the whole movie. Mario and Peach, along with Donkey Kong, try to defeat Bowser. There’s a “plot”, I guess, but there’s really no story per se. It’s just the characters reenacting the game. You get all your favorites including Mario Kart. Nerds will love it, I guess, but casuals with shrug. I’m more of a Sonic guy and the Sonic movies are definitely better. Yeah, go ahead SnoBorderZero, fight me. Jack Black is okay, I guess. And there’s a pointless post-credit scene. The mid-credit scene is alright. Long story short, 1995 Mortal Kombat is still the best video game movie. Come fight me, PG Cooper. I’m waiting.

This godforsaken movie that even SnoBorderZero hates, is projected to have grossed $30M today!

92 minutes means a lotta showings per screens.
Even my niece is hyped and it will be I think only her second theater experience.
The people who made it already complaining that only neckbeard basement dwellers will dislike it is a bit... Annoying and disingenuous.

Even my niece is hyped and it will be I think only her second theater experience. This is one of those movies that have really made me feel old. I see some people my age being annoyed or frustrated about this movie and itès so clearly made for very young kids that I don't have it in me to care.

This is a lazy Member Berries catered to the very neck beards they’re attacking. The Sonic movies have very little to do with the video game and families showed up for it. Families would have come out for Mario no matter the quality. What’s driving the box office to Marvel level is the nerds coming in droves.

This movie reeks of corporate safety and laziness, not that it should be surprising coming from Illumination. It's not so much that while watching this you're actively upset or frustrated, but the movie just washes over you in rote procedure where things just happen because characters say that's what's happening now and there doesn't seem to be an ounce of inspiration or fun in how to take this franchise into any territory that isn't "play it safe and make as much money as possible". There aren't any motivations for characters, and every plot point is nothing more than a video game stage where Mario has to go through an obstacle course or defeat Donkey Kong or do this other undistinguished task. I know this is a video game movie so technically I'm complaining while being the Jason Bateman meme from Arrested Development getting exactly what I expected, but even with low standards and expectations this movie meets none of them. Chris Pratt is a terrible choice for Mario, and everyone else outside of Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Seth Rogen are clearly phoning it in and collecting a hefty paycheck.
I could rip this awful movie point by point and call it out for being the shameless cash cow that it's destined to be, but this movie is also so insignificant and clearly made only for children under the age of 12 that there's no point. While it doesn't have the appallingly bad decision making of the live action movie, it also doesn't attempt to be anything either and you couldn't fault the 1993 film for that at least. It's not fun, it's not funny, it doesn't work for any of the adults hoping to enjoy some nostalgia, it's just Space Jam 2 with Mario in it (and thankfully better than that movie but that's not saying much). In the hands of an animation company that could bring a snarky wit to Mario that both honors the video game legend while also poking fun at him, this could've been a fun and maybe even special movie. In the hands of Illumination -- who have never offered anything worth watching and seem to operate their movies like they're a commercial enterprise and nothing more -- The Super Mario Bros. movie is anything but.
4/10

And yes Neverending the Sonic movies are much better than this. Sega lost the console wars, but they're winning the cinematic one. Sort of.

clearly made only for children under the age of 12 If this Mario movie had come out when I was 12, I think the whole theater would have rioted. We didn’t tolerate that bullshit Batman & Robin movie. You think we would have accepted this? Get the fuck outta here.

Get the fuck outta here. Probably the biggest mistake this movie makes is taking away Luigi. Or not cutting to Luigi and Bowser moments. Movie was in desperate need of some actual laughs.

It would be neat if for the sequel they did an entirely new and different art style.
Then returned to the first art style for 3.
I'm dreading seeing this and there's a big group of us, for some reason a lot of non movie going public has decided they need to see this. And not bring their children.

The pacing is awful. They just rush from scene to scene. And what was with the music choices?

Basically take '80s Top 40 Starter Pack Songs and that's what you get here. And it's befuddling because there's nothing here for anyone over the age of 12, and so why inundate this movie with songs from 40 years ago? I get that Mario came out in the '80s, but there's not even funny references to that time or this sort of Ready Player One self awareness to play on. Take on Me? Holding Out for a Hero? It was the equivalent of all those bad contemporary movies set in the '60s that just roll out the typical CCR and Time of the Season playlist for Vietnam. No originality whatsoever.

Since Nintendo had a hand in this is this canon now? Are they starting the ncu and giving us back stories and stuff?
Was Mario a Brooklynite from the 2020s (going off the cell phone)? Peach really wasn't ever his princess?
But honestly I think you guys are pretty wildly cynical (laughable from me I know) - yes it's low effort but it wasn't offensive. Most of the voice acting was pretty good to pretty okay.
Prob go 6/10 on the sliding scale and for a very little kids movie I'd recommend it.
