As the first Friday the 13th of 2023 winds down, I’m gonna finally take my pants off and watch X and Pearl. I was initially hyped to watch X, prior to its release, but lost interest when the important parts were leaked online. Then Pearl came out of nowhere and my interests were piqued again. Since these are relatively new films (that only SnoBorderZero has watched a million times) I won’t spoil anything and just chime in whenever there’s anything substantial to make note of. I may also take a dinner break at some point. First up is X. |

X is set in Houston Texas in 1979. We meet a group of people rent a barn house to shoot a porn film. This is right before VHS killed the theatrical porn industry so the characters think they’re making a “real movie.” The satirical nature of it is really good.
Cast is Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow and Kid Cudi among others.

We’re introduced to a creepy old lady that is jealous of the youth and sexual prowess of our cast. So she starts to kill them.

The violence is surprisingly tame. The kills aren’t uncreative but if you’re expecting a gore fest you’ll be disappointed. So far.

I’d argue this movie is mostly predictable. If SnoBorderZero had asked me to make a porno slasher film with him, this is mostly what we’d have made. But the old people stuff is certainly… a twist. |

Pearl is sheltered and lives with an overbearing mother. She wants to run away from home and become a famous actress. She loves going to the movies and ends up shagging up with the projectionist. One night shit hits the fan with her mother and it unleashes the murderous side of Pearl.
Mia Goth’s performance certainly lives up to the hype.
