It’s Die Hard but with Santa Claus, and a sprinkle of John Wick and Home Alone. It’s alright. If you want a fun night with your pals, then yeah, this’ll be the movie to watch this weekend. But if you want real cinema, don’t forget Lyle Lyle Crocodile is still in theaters.

Loads of fun. Not much in the way of surprises for anyone who has seen the trailer. The movie delivers on exactly what the trailer promises. Considering that Disney still refuses to allow Christmas season screenings of Die Hard, Violent Night makes a fun stand-in. Just don't take your kids to see it. That R rating is well earned!

Coulda trimmed about 25 minutes off that last half and it woulda been an extremely tight movie that everyone would have enjoyed.
The trailer explains the whole thing, they add a neat little back story wrinkle to the Santa mythos, harbour is incredibly charming as Santa, the little girl is used sparingly enough to not completely annoy, and the kills are fast and exciting. You just kinda wish more of the family got wiped out (would have solved the worst parts of the movie) - but as it stands it's a solid choice for counter programming this holiday season.

Yeah, this was mostly fun and delivers on what it promises, aka Santa bestowing some Seasons Beatings. Kind of like Mel Gibson in Fatman, David Harbour doesn't treat the role as a joke and nothing else, but instead taps into just enough emotional territory to make Santa an actual character here. But more than that, the action scenes pop and the movie sure doesn't hold back on the brutality. My main complaint is that the characterization for a lot of the family members being held hostage and the humor for them, as well as the whole movie in general, felt a bit too broad and maybe held the movie back some. But overall, I got what I wanted out of this and could see it becoming a seasonal staple of sorts.
