Amy Adams is a million years old and comes across as a kooky grandma rather than a charming cartoon character transported to a live-action world. Add Maya Rudolph and whats-her-face from Frozen into the mix and you got yourself a bunch of old hens hamming up the telephone screen. I know PhantomKnight is gonna love it, and if he’s happy, I’m happy. Also, Doomsday’s household is about to become disenchanted which is icing on the cake.

Right now the current movie on endless loop is Apple's Luck. Not sure what's so enticing about it but the kid can't get enough.

Have some standards. I just looked at Letterboxd and saw you gave it a solid one star. That's incredible. I've never given it a close look, usually I'm working when she's watching TV and the G rating was good enough for me. No way it can be as bad as Ninja Turtles III or the Power Rangers Movie, my parents had to endure those in the theater with me.

It's bad, but it's not as claw-your-eyes-out terrible as Drac would have you believe.

I watched Ninja Turtles III for the first time near the start of the pandemic and I must say it didn't seem THAT bad. Mostly it just seemed like a kind of shitty kids movie, but nothing too wretched. Then again, I was pretty drunk.

Neverending I wanted the kid to watch something other than Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Blue Valentine so I turned on Enchanted. She was a big fan and I feel another spin is coming before the end of the weekend. I asked if she wanted to watch Disenchanted but she told me she didn't think I'd want to watch a movie with an unfuckable Amy Adams (her words). I even told her that PhantomKnight was a fan but she didn't care, she's four so she doesn't give a shit what he or Coop or franky or anyone here thinks.

Disenchanted(12/17/2022) Well here’s another movie watched for the silly and stubborn reason of insisting on getting every minute I can out of the month of Disney+ I paid for and this one was really misguided. This “sequel” to Enchanted seems to fit into what seems like a distressing trend at Disney: sequels that are made with streaming in mind and kind of feel like the cheapo direct-to-video sequels of old despite having been legitimized with most of the first movie’s original cast, and the fact that it was directed by uber-hack Adam Shankman kind of tells you their ambitions for this. The movie is set at least ten years after the events of the first film (though it’s taken fifteen years to make) and begins by the family formed at the end of that film moving from New York (an essential and defining setting in the first movie) to the suburbs in what sure seems like a move intended to cut costs on this. If not for the presence of Amy Adams and other legit stars I would almost suspect this was meant as a backdoor pilot for some sort of Disney Channel sitcom adaptation of the franchise, which might have been the better road to go down actually. Now, I suspect that, but I also suspect that the real problem here is that they took a script that was meant to be for a sequel made a couple years after the original and held onto it even though it’s been a decade and a half and a lot of the developments here don’t really line up with that, namely the fact that the Amy Adams character still seems bizarrely oblivious to the norms of her new home despite having lived there for a decade. Beyond that the Disney parody of the whole franchise just feels dated and played out. There have probably been more film parodies of pre-Renaissance Disney Princess movies at this point then there were actual pre-Renaissance Disney Princess movies and the cut production values just make this one not feel like a real movie at all. Complete waste of time for everyone involved, they should have left well enough alone. * out of Five

Those who know me well enough might think that 2007's Enchanted is a movie that'd pretty much be up my alley, but eh, no -- I never really went for it. So, I can't say that the prospect of a sequel all these years later ever appealed to me, yet I still found myself sitting down to watch Disenchanted. This marks the third made-exclusively-for-Disney+ movie that I've seen after Home Sweet Home Alone and Hocus Pocus 2, and I think it's safe to say that the era of terrible direct-to-home-video Disney sequels has been resurrected. May the Lord have mercy on our souls. This...this is just terrible. There's no way around that fact. Again, I didn't much care for Enchanted, but at least that movie was trying and had some genuine care put into it. Disenchanted, by comparison, completely lives up to its title by feeling every bit like the soulless and uninspired sequel that it is. The plot concerns Giselle -- now married to Patrick Dempsey's character and with an infant daughter of their own -- becoming disappointed with the ordinary quality of her life in the modern world and wishing for a little bit of magic to spruce it up again. But, of course, that wish comes with its own twists. Soon, everybody starts behaving like they're in a Disney fairy tale and if the wish is still intact by the stroke of midnight, things will be permanent. Apparently, this movie went through several script drafts before settling on this final version, from a first-time screenwriter, but if this is really the version of the story that Disney wanted...yikes. There's one big glaring thing about it that, while maybe not making it better, could have at least added a bit of interest: Morgan, the young girl from the first film, is now a typical teenager who's lost touch with her sense of childlike wonder. In this current version, she too falls under the spell and forgets who she really is. But consider if the spell hadn't worked on her and she had to get back in touch with her inner kid and save everyone from the spell. It would have at least been a more decent driving force than Giselle gradually becoming a Wicked stepmother (which feels half-baked in execution to begin with) and provided a more sound emotional arc between Morgan and Giselle. Instead, what we're left with is a very lame and cheap-looking movie that's years too late, with too-hammy acting and surprisingly lackluster songs (the tunes in Spirited handily kick these songs' asses). I don't what the mandate is or was over at Disney+ in terms of their original films, but if Disenchanted is the latest indication, I wouldn't be surprised if it was "Make some of the worst movies of a particular calendar year." If that's the case, well, Disenchanted is very much on-brand.
