Whenever there is a full moon I turn into PhantomKnight and say something outrageous on the internet. This is the best DCEU movie. The Rock plays Black Adam, the Shazam of an ancient Middle Eastern country. He’s resurrected in the Snyderverse to protect his people with an iron fist. Black Adam is trying to do for Middle Eastern people what Black Panther did for the African American community and it mostly succeeds, even with an Hawaiian WWF star in the lead role. I liked the cast. I enjoyed the action. The score is great! I had fun watching it. And I’m totally down for Pierce Brosnan to come back as James Bond.

Actually, The Rock is half-black and half-Samoan. I watched his father Rocky Johnson and his maternal grandfather Peter Maivia wrestling back in the 70's.

The script is paper thin and as a whole, the movie feels like an almost 90's-era comic book film...but in a more successful way that the Venom movies and Morbius tried for, but failed. I had a lot of fun watching it.

What’s your beef with Ticket to Paradise? I still need to finish Going In Style and Just Getting Started, I don't have time for another baby boomer comedy.

Don't think I have it in me to bother with this one. Let me just say this: I remember you saying on your podcast recently how you've been lamenting The Rock's whole "nice guy action hero" persona in his movies lately and want to see him embrace more of his wrestling persona again. Well, you pretty much get that in this movie. Dude just be killing fools left and right in this movie.

It might be the best dceu movie. It's not bad, they smartly kind of avoid doing too much with black Adam since he's not really at all a sympathetic character, JSA are all pretty great outside cyclone (always looking ridiculous in action) but it's still not a great movie, there's a half hour or so towards the end that really starts to drag right before the climax that could have used another pass in the writers room.
And the unfortunate Jesus walks usage is quite jarring as it comes around twice.
About on the level of Shazam and Aquaman. Little better than wonder woman.

If nothing else, Dwayne Johnson deserves credit for being a one-man marketing/hype machine, so good on him for selling the shit out of his first-ever comic book leading role, Black Adam. Does all of his hype translate to this being a good movie? I'm not sure I can go THAT far, but I do know this: I had a lot of fun watching this movie. To be sure, this is a movie that comes complete with a paper-thin script, minimal/basic character development and even a plucky (i.e. kind of annoying) kid/teen character who follows our central figure around a lot, not to mention a plain, nothingburger of a villain who's only there to eventually serve as the Third Act threat (what are we, back in the 90's/early 2000's era of comic book movies again?), but what keeps this thing held together is its sheer energy and genuinely fun quality. The vast majority of this film takes place within both a pretty short amount of time and this one city out in the Middle East, and I honestly liked that. Because while the story here isn't the most developed, this approach gives the whole movie a pretty laser-focused/streamlined quality that certainly does favors for the overall pace and momentum of the movie. Once Black Adam himself comes into the picture, the movie just keeps building and building on itself in a way that kept me entertained. It also helps that the numerous action sequences themselves are infused with tons of energy by director Jaume Collet-Serra, and that the cast has plenty of charm and charisma to boot. Dwayne Johnson's stoic badass approach to Black Adam himself really works and leads to some good dry humor, while the whole Justice Society of America have great personalities. Pierce Brosnan and Aldis Hodge as Dr. Fate and Hawkman respectively do a lot to elevate their characters and scenes, and another of the movie's joys is seeing these characters interact with one another. This is a movie very much driven by the strength of the personalities of its characters and the entertainment value of its action sequences, and fortunately, those aspects deliver. Enough to keep the movie afloat, because make no mistake, it's certainly not going to win any awards for its writing. But at the same time, a more simple-minded comic book movie like Black Adam is something of a nice change of pace from the spinning door-rotation of world-ending stakes that have underscored a lot of its brethren the past number of years. Neither is Black Adam on the upper level of the genre, either, but y'know, it knows exactly what it is and what it needs to do, and in that respect, it's a pretty fun time.
