A four-part Hollywood franchise based on Stephen King's 1978 novel, The Stand, is to be made, with Matthew McConaughey tipped to star. The adaptation has long been rumoured, but director Josh Boone, who also directed The Fault in Our Stars, has confirmed on Kevin Smith’s Hollywood Babble-On podcast that a four-part version of the 1200-word novel is to be made by Warner Bros, written and directed by Boone. The Oscar-winning actor McConaughey has for months been associated with the supernatural character of Randall Flagg in a possible adaptation. Randall Flagg is a demon and cruel sorcerer who features in nine of King's novels, including The Dark Tower. In The Stand, Flagg tries to reconstruct civilisation in Las Vegas after a plague wipes out most of the Earth's population. Boone described The Stand as “a morality play set in post-apocalyptic America. The battle between good and evil is the battle for these peoples’ souls... the Godfather of post-apocalyptic thrillers.” McConaughey won the Oscar for best actor in 2014 for his performance in The Dallas Buyers Club, and has also starred in True Detective, Magic Mike and most recently Christopher Nolan's space epic, Interstellar. Filming of The Stand is expected to begin in 2015. www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-news/11252124/Stephen-King-The-Stand-Matthew-McConaughey-Josh-Boone.html

I read it as a 4-part TV adaptation, for some reason. Whoops.

I have the old Gary Sinise one on VHS somewhere. It was given to me by a friend on my 13th birthday. I had no idea why. I hadn't read a single page of King, but it became this odd tradition to watch it every year around my birthday. I think lasted for 4 years. Haven't touch it since.

I remember watching the Gary Sinise one as a kid. My dad loved the book so he ended up recording the entire series.

I still watch the miniseries once a year or so. Due to it airing on network tv, a lot of stuff is cheesy and dated, but there a few things they should bring back for the upcoming films:
Matt Frewer as Trashcan Man The moron from coach as M-O-O-N that spells he's probably old now. The entire opening sequence set to Don't Fear the Reaper Laura San Giacomo's rack.

Laura San Giacomo's rack. She's 52 and became friends with gravity.

I loved the miniseries. All the King, 90s-era miniseries for that matter. I remember being really upset when they killed off Rob Lowe's character so early on. Some great music, too. Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over R.E.M. - It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Amongst others.

Yeah all three of those songs are mentioned in the book if I remember right.
There is one chapter in the expanded edition that deals with all the people that can't cut it in the new post plague world and die through their own stupidity. I really hope that makes it into the films.

I hate to deliver bad news, but The Stand was 20 years ago. We're both old... and she's even older. But we'll always have the memories. I watched all 7 seasons of Just Shoot Me to support the legendary rack.

Apologies for the awful background music, it was the best video of his moments I could find.
