This is 100% me outsourcing ideas for a video essay.
I'm trying to think of good examples where film critics played a major role in helping bring a new director to prominence. My first instinct was Moonlight, given Barry Jenkins was a pretty under-the-radar director before the rapturous critical reception to Moonlight propelled the film to Oscar wins and Jenkins to one of the most vital filmmaking voices of his generation. That seems a good enough example to me, but I'd be curious to hear if you guys have any others.

That's a pretty broad question. Most directors that started at any level of indie could be said to be some degree of "created" by critical word of mouth and/or festival buzz. Conversely, pretty much any success story could be attributed to something else. Barry Jenkins, for example certainly benefited from great reviews but he also had the A24 machine behind him for Moonlight. Chloé Zhao might be a purer example?
I know there's footage out there of Patty Jenkins at an award show personally thanking Roger Ebert for championing Monster, that might be a good example.

Right now I'm using a critic's quote poster of Moonlight to make the point visually.

How about Roger Ebert and Justin Lin with Better Luck Tomorrow?
Not sure it quite fits but this moment sticks in my head
