It's not an 'or' situation. When’s the last time you watched any of those without be forced to or for video essay reasons? So yes, it is an “or” situation. Do you want to watch an actual good movie or do you want to be a masochist? The only one I watched for a video essay was Godfather III, which specifically came from an itch to revisit the film and re-evaluate my feelings on it. I was hardly forced. Also went out to rewatch The Outsiders in theaters a couple years ago and I just watched Youth Without Youth like 2 weeks ago and enjoyed it a lot. How do you explain The Conversation? His worse movie from the 70’s? Which is to say it's better than the vast majority of movies made by anyone and better than anything Coppola made outside of that decade. |

No matter what Coppola's career became after Apocalypse Now, he had the best decade of any filmmaker ever and possibly the best sole year ever with 1974. I've been going through early De Palma recently. Need to see Phantom of the Paradise still. |
