I bet if Fruitvale Station had been released this year, instead of last year, it would have won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Timing is everything, my friends. Anyway, I'm sure all of you saw this movie by now, but if you haven't, it's about Oscar Grant, the Black kid who was killed by police on New Years Day 2009 at the Oakland train station. I can't remember who, but someone at the old CS lives in the Oakland area and offered first-hand account of the aftermath. If you're here, speak up. Anyway... the movie does a good job of re-creating the events of the day. My only complain is that the portrayal of Oscar Grant is a bit too... Hollywood. There's literally a scene where he tries to rescue a dog that got ran over by a car. Like... come on... this is already a tragic story. Don't turn it into a sappy one. Leave that to Best Picture winner, 12 Years a Slave.

When it came out last year everyone was calling it really topical because of the Trayvon Martin case, so their timing wasn't that bad.

By awards season, Trayvon was "old news." Can you imagine the movie being released NOW? Talk about free publicity and a free ride to the Oscars.

This never really appealed to me. I remember seeing posters everywhere for it though.
