Morbius 2: Morbius v. Morpheus (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Morbin')

Morbius being used as a weapon for good.

This was worse than I expected even going in with the lowest of expectations. Does anything in this movie even remotely work?

Jared Leto is awful in the title role, attempting to straddle the line of melancholy brooding and effortlessly cool and failing immensely at both. His character feels more like a caricature of poorly assembled villain origin stories. His powers seemed to be endless, none of which were presented well. In fact the sequence of Leto using voiceover exposition to guide us through the "learning the powers" montage is perhaps the worst of its kind in a crowded field of examples of how not to write that scene.

Matt Smith has fun hamming it up as the villain, but his character is perhaps even more ridiculously uninspired than Leto's. There's no real transition to the other side or build up to letting these new powers take hold in exchange for their morality; it just occurs without the slightest of hesitation and doesn't feel earned at all.

The CGI is ugly, cheap, and lazy in every sequence. The action is laughably paltry. There isn't a single winning joke or moment or fun to be had with the damn thing. Marvel has made its share of crap, but even fellow bottom feeders like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Blade: Trinity knew what a train wreck they were and hammed it all up for laughs. Morbius, like its lead, takes itself far too seriously and as a result isn't the slightest bit of fun. It's self-serious, half-baked, and doesn't bring anything new to the table. The only thing it has going for it is that it isn't Elektra. That's it.
