They did it. Those maniacs did it. They made a Canadian Disney-Pixar movie. Where’s the PG Cooper video essay? Oh, right. He’s unpatriotic. There shall be none. Plus… he might be a little racist. Anyway, this movie is a-may-zing. I love it. The characters are so lively and fluid. I love the fusion of traditional Pixar animation and anime — with a little Warner Bros/DreamWorks mixed in. The story is cute and relatable. It’s a shame it didn’t get a theatrical release, but it’s certainly convenient to have it available on Disney+. Go out and support it. Give Doomsday a break from Encanto. The man has suffered enough.

Give Doomsday a break from Encanto. The man has suffered enough. Dude, just 12 hours ago I was at my computer doing work. I saw an ad for Turning Red and wasn't sure what it was. I watched the clip and saw 'Pixar...Disney+...NOW STREAMING.' Within 2 minutes that thing was playing on my TV and for the next 30 beautiful, sweet minutes I was given a reprieve from Encanto. God bless you, Turning Red.

I still need to catch up with Luca. Fuck them Italians. Maybe once every 75 years Hollywood acknowledges Canada. Seize the moment.

So Doomsday & SnoBorderZero, check out the Making-Of. It’s crazy to see people our age writing-directing Pixar movies. Our time has arrived. But it also makes me sad cause I feel I haven’t accomplished anything. At least Doomsday gets to make Deadpool 3. That fucker.

Aren’t you a math teacher? How did this movie capture the youth of Canada?

I feel the metaphor here doesn't really work, as the thing its a metaphor for is also very present in the film itself.

Now that I think about it...is this Pixar's first non-buddy movie? While watching Turning Red (screw you, Bob Chapek, for shuffling this film direct to Disney Plus and thereby treating it dirty, just like Soul and Luca), I was really picking up on and getting into the sense of fresh energy that this movie giving off. At first, I thought that it was mainly due to the sheer energy that director Domee Shi (of Bao fame) was bringing to it, from the fusion of traditional Pixar and anime animation styles to the clearly personal streak/meaning/context that the core story holds for her. And all of that is certainly a big reason for this movie's success. But also, like I said, Turning Red bucks Pixar's traditional buddy comedy formula for something decidedly different for them...and it leads to very strong results. Again, it's easy to pick up on the clearly personal levels of passion that Shi is channeling into this and that in turn gives the movie a lot of its charm. All of the characters, from main character Mei to her gaggle of friends and also her parents, have real charm and personality to them and are also portrayed in a very relatable fashion. As with all Pixar movies, the core values and themes of Turning Red are ones that anybody can get into; never mind if you were never a 13 year-old girl, the script just has that Pixar touch wherein the metaphor (even if it may be on-the-nose) encompasses enough of the core adolescent experience that it becomes universal. That, and this movie's just so damn delightful. There's absolutely a good helping of heart to this movie, but the comedy is also really funny.
I can't go so far as to say that Turning Red is on the level of some of Pixar's heavy hitters, but it's still a very strong effort from them all the same. It would've been nice to have seen such talent displayed on the big screen, but hey, at least we still get to enjoy it in general.

Turning Red(5/7/2022) As I’ve said a number of times recently I’m a bit of a defender of latter day Pixar, which I think gets held to a bit of an unfair standard by critics, so it’s interesting that their latest film Turning Red is their first film in a while where I’m actually less enthused than the critical consensus. That isn’t to say that there isn’t a lot here to like. The film looks at a thirteen year old girl from a Chinese immigrant family who suddenly turns into a human sized red panda one morning and learns that this is a family curse and that she needs to just endure for a month before it can be exorcised through a ritual when the moon is in a specific alignment. The film’s director, Domee Shi, has been very vocal about the fact that the film (minus the whole red panda thing) is drawing from her own childhood memories and the conflicts she had with her mother, who I think would qualify as what they call a “Tiger Mom.” The film does a good job or really putting you in this protagonist’s perspective and you can definitely see why her mother’s behavior would seem rather mortifying to her. The problem though is that I don’t think the red panda part holds together even a little as a metaphor. Many have viewed these transformations as being about anxiety over puberty, which makes sense initially but with very few exceptions puberty isn’t something you can decide to stop or not stop at a certain point and it’s also not something that’s exclusive to any one family. I suppose this could be more of a statement about the Chinese traditionalist family demanding people like this character repress their sexual urges, which is a much less comfortable thing to try to talk about critically for a variety of reasons and is kind of a weird thing to make a Pixar movie about. There’s probably something there but I don’t think it works cleanly and I can’t say I was terribly impressed by the film’s chaotic kaiju inspired ending. In general I think I would have liked it better if it was a straight coming of age story with no red panda hijinks but at that point why are you making a Pixar animation? There’s enough in the film to make it worth a watch but I think it’s kind of a confused movie in a lot of ways.
