Maybe a bit early and here's hoping it won't happen but thought I'd begin a thread about what could be the start of WW3. Like c'mon this is history repeating itself once again.
Is this our generation's Cuban Missile Crisis? If Putin blinks and invades, I can't help but think he's in it till all the bodies hit the floor or he does. If Russia invades its going to get bombed economically and sanctioned so if he is ok with that he's going to go all out. Doesn't that make sense? Anyone in the inner workings of the Kremlin who can shed some light on this? lol
There has clearly been a huge amount of political posturing and inflammatory rhetoric on both sides. It seems like huge effort to eventually decide nothing is going to happen. Hoping cooler heads prevail. With all these other countries soldiers in and around the region, just one soldier has to go down from those countires and then all the pacts and treaties have to be backed up and we are into WW3.

Maybe, but there's a very good chance that it ends up being something more akin to Russia's Vietnam. Biden has mostly succeeded in uniting the NATO countries to stand firm on this but at the end of the day Ukraine is not a NATO country or a formal ally and the U.S. and E.U. are under no obligation to directly enter into a war between it and Russia, and their move would likely be to supply arms and coordination to Ukrainian fighters. Ukraine is a large country that would be very difficult to occupy if the people there stand tough and engage in a long resistance fight. Russia's economy is not doing great now and this whole situation has not had the rally around the flag effect Putin may have been hoping for and if body bags start returning home in large numbers the people could turn against him for starting the boondoggle for nebulous reasons and for the even bigger hit to their economy that would result from the sanctions that would follow. That's the best scenario of a War in Ukraine for the western world. The less good scenario is that Putin cuts off oil going to Europe making the price of gas worldwide skyrocket, then everyone caves and Russia gets what it wants. Either way I don't think WW3 is the most likely outcome.

That's a good point that it could turn into Russia's Vietnam. Good thoughts.
If reports are true, sounds like there could be a softening, soldiers and tanks being withdrawn.
My take is that Russia is clearly trying to prove a point and state they have potential to cause problems if NATO overimposes in Ukraine. US can now yell their faces off that war is imminent so if it happens, they can play the moral high card and also it is a deterrent to starting a war in the international public opinion sphere.
Hoping tensions simmer. Completely, plus I'm not liking filling up my car for $100 these days.

Russia already had their Vietnam. They made an entire movie about it.

Kept reading those reports about how imminent it was and invasion didn't happen so I was hoping it would just de-escalate. So sad, feeling like there are going to be a lot of dominoes falling over time with this one.

All these sanctions, a new spate of them everyday from different countries... is it going to make any difference?? Right now it looks like all thats going to happen is Ukraine as a country will be smashed and Russia ends up economically crushed. Real lose-lose, it's so sad.

The hope is that this economic devastation combined with the number of body bags coming home will ultimately undermine Putin's regime and get his people to stop supporting him or at least scare him enough that he strongly reconsiders actions like this in the future.

I understand the antisanction let's plea for compassion to the general populace, but none of their alternatives are realistic (ex. We're long past diplomacy). Best you could hope for here is targeted sanctions against the oligarchs to foment an anti-Putin contingent, and surreptitious arms trading to the Ukranians.

Some of the oligarchs are speaking out against Putin. So that might be a sign these sanctions are being effective towards Putin's biggest contributors.
But in the end, I think the more people come out against Putin the more that maniac doubles down on his efforts in an attempt to prove to himself he made the right call.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/mar/07/donald-trump-russia-ukraine-jets-chinese"In a speech to Republican donors in New Orleans, Donald Trump said the US should put the Chinese flag on F-22 jets and “bomb the shit out of Russia” in retribution for its invasion of Ukraine.
The Washington Post reported the remarks, which were made on Saturday night.
To laughter, the paper said, the former president said: “And then we say, ‘China did it, we didn’t do it, China did it,’ and then they start fighting with each other and we sit back and watch.”
They say he was joking, but Trump definitely believes this would be a great idea. Same way he tried to walk back injecting bleach when he was dead serious.

I have no words for that Trump quote article. Want to say shocked but just another crazy Trump quote for the mill. The world has dodged the biggest bullet not having him at the helm with Ukraine Russia on the go.

'Take cover, the Americans are bombing us! Their jets are flying overhead!' 'But comrade, the shrapnel, it has a Chinese flag on it. It even says Made in China.' '....mother of god.'

Tucker Carlson has been saying he backs Russia for a while now.
Biggest influence on the entire gop all sound absolutely insane. And we are heading into almost a guaranteed switch back to those chucklefucks in 24.
Better hope the American populace doesn't have it's regularly scheduled forgetfulness.

It really is astounding to me that the party that worshipped Ronald Reagan, staunch enemy of the Soviet Union, and that whine about Communism at every turn are pro-Russia. I mean, it isn't because the Republicans are now for autocrats and would love nothing more to make Trump king of this country. But still, the bar has always been very low for Republicans but they keep lowering it and lowering it with all this pro-Putin propaganda.

The GOP platform has since evolved into countering whatever the fuck the liberals are in favor of because that makes them the most money. Joe Biden could say "We need oxygen to breathe" and Tucker Carlson would run a segment ranting "Hold on, why are we in favor of oxygen when plants need carbon dioxide to thrive? I'm just asking questions."
The honest to god truth is that all the Republicans who were alive during the Reagan era should be horrified by the stances they're taking. Hell, even democrats who hated Reagan should acknowledge that the party has devolved into something much worse than it was under Reagan, even if Reagan was arguably the start of it spiraling downward.
