Is it just me or does it feel like this movie was made for people who play Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering? No offense, we're all family here, but this movie is TOO geeky. Say what you want about the first Thor movie but at least the New Mexico scenes humanized the characters and story. Here, it's like, "what the fuck am I watching?" If it wasn't for Loki and the awesome music, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone who has ever felt a vagina. And speaking of the music, can we agree it's the best music of any Marvel STUDIOS movie?

A couple friends saw it who said it was the weakest of the phase 1/phase 2 Marvel movies. I wasn't huge on Thor to begin with so I'll take their word for it.

I liked it better than Iron Man 2 and 3.

Iron Man 2 is at the bottom of the list, easily. Unless you count The Incredible Hulk in this set of films (which I do not). I do not care for IM2 at all.
I didn't like Iron Man 3 as much as everyone else, but I didn't by any means dislike it (especially compared to IM2, which I don't even care to rewatch anymore). I also don't think Thor 2 was great, and I liked the first one better, but I just happened to have liked Thor 2 more than the last two Iron Man flicks. I've found the Thor films more interesting to watch, and the stories more compelling. By contrast, I didn't really care about what was happening in the story of IM3, especially with the bigger connection all these films now have. There was a disconnect in it that made me less invested.
Which is a shame, because undoubtedly Iron Man/Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr is easily one of the best characters in this universe, and the first Iron Man is one of my favorite films of them all. I like Iron Man, the character, leaps ahead of a character like Thor.

So this was average but well presented. The setting looked like Middle Earth meets Naboo. Some very nice story elements and some we definitely seen before. Didn't have as good of a grasp on the humor as other MCU installments, except for Loki, who absolutely killed it. Hiddleston is...wonderful. It also took me half the movie to realize that was Christopher Eccleston. Very nice. Not sure why Skargard had to be batshit crazy, and Natalie Portman just bugs me in this role, not sure why....and hey it's Charles Carmichael! Oh and the music. My god the music. Overall I enjoyed it, though maybe a step back from the first one. Hardly the worst Marvel has given us though. But well acted for the most part, fairly well covered deception, and some really fun action set pieces. B-

I really enjoyed this movie. Anytime you take elements of Superheroes and add Fantasy to it. I'll show up no matter what the movie is.
The last time we had a movie that did something like that was "Hellboy 2" which is so under-rated. Great film if anyone hasn't seen it.

For me, the movie plays it way too safe with absolutely nothing unique or exciting. The villain is horribly bland and the comedy is all kinds of annoying.

And speaking of the music, can we agree it's the best music of any Marvel STUDIOS movie? For whatever reason, I've been listening to the score a lot this week, and you know what, I might just have to agree there.

I watched Thor: The Dark World in anticipation for Avengers 2 which I'll watch at some point or another. With the exception of Incredible Hulk this remained the last of the Marvel/Avengers canon that I had yet to see. I was never a fan of the first Thor movie (although I'd rank it above Captain America: The First Avenger) in that I felt it boring and a lot felt pretty hamfisted. That leaves me to question why I thought I would expect Thor: The Dark World to be an improvement. What I got was a movie that adds nothing to the Avengers/Marvel storyline and even as a standalone film is forgettable and drab. That isn't to say that the whole movie was a bore. The beginning introduced interesting concepts and although we still had a villain who wanted to destroy just for the sake of destruction, at least he wanted to destroy the universe instead of being yet another guy who just wants to destroy the world. I like when stakes get raised. But fast forward to the nonsensical, confusing and all-around boring ending and the result is a mess of a movie that leaves our characters where they pretty much were in the first place. Thor has always been the least interesting of the recent Marvel characters and this movie, which should have been more character infused since we already got introductions out of the way with the first one, didn't add anything to the mix. A misfire and wasted opportunity.
And unsure if she's in the comics but can we think of a more boring name for a female character than Jane Foster? The only one worse that comes to mind is Katherine Brewster from Terminator 3.

It adds nothing to the Avengers/Marvel storyline. It helps to watch these movies in order. All these Marvel movies are telling one giant story.

You're right, I just don't know what this story had to do with anything. Maybe nothing since there's the mid-credits scene with the Collector but if we're having an entire mediocre movie essentially build up to one separate scene regarding infinity stones then I don't find it worth my time.

I think the portals or whatever will play a role in the other movies.

The red glowing macguffin is an infinity stone, so it's eventually going to play into Avengers 3. The whole infinity gauntlet storyline is kind of brilliant because it basically gives them an excuse to make the same damn movie over and over again and justify it as "part of a story" because the glowing macguffins are supposed to have some special purpose within the mythology.

Everything I've been hearing/reading lately about Thor: Ragnarok leads me to believe that this is going to be "the good one" when it comes to Thor movies. If Ragnarok really is a Hulk movie disguised as a Thor movie for legal purposes, so much the better. I'd far rather see a Hulk movie than a Thor one.
