So my little Toshiba laptop is about to turn 8 years old (yes, I said 8) and it's finally giving in to time. Since I haven't had a new computer in nearly a decade I'm looking to get something with little muscle.
While I know a tower units have better memory for large media projects, I still need something portable to run cues off of for shows, though I'm not rulling anything out yet. I'm asking around and doing my own research but I'd like to hear what experiences you guys have had.
Here's what I plan to use it for: Video editing Sound editing and mixing Cue running (have programs for both Mac and PC) Voice recording and editing Drafting and lighting plots Possible simple music composition General Office stuff
I know Macs tend to be better for the media editting, and I've used my roommates Mac book in the past with no issues but Apple's lack of software malleability is a bit irksome. Also, I'm not planning on doing much gaming on it though I do watch a lot of movies on my current one.
I'm not too concerned with price right now. I'm willing to put up money for something I will use, but nothing outrageous.
Any recommendations or tips are welcome.

So I guess the monkeys never showed up? Untrustworthy little scam-artists.
I'd honestly recommend a Mac. They do lack a lot in the software department (and if you're a gamer, their catalogue is pretty sparse). But for what you're looking for, it could be suitable. In film school, they almost always provide you with Macs or heavily discounted ones. Or you could just build your own PC. I know nothing about PCs though.

Ah those were the work computers. And they break down weekly. It's completely ridiculous how much the network goes belly up. Most of the designers I work with use Macs and they swear by them but PC's just have more potential options. The biggest thing probably is making sure I have enough memory to run the programs I want. I have an external drive I can save things on to save space as well.

I made an identical thread on the 'other' boards. I ended up going with a MacBook Pro and it's been very good to me. You can do much of what you're looking for.

Mac's are expensive. If you can afford it, go for it, but any run-of-the-mill PC will work fine these days.

I've lucked out and been able to get a good deal on a laptop at the Base Exchange. Especially when I found out that some of the laptops there are military "exclusive" models. I would say stick with Toshiba, Asus, Lenovo if you aren't getting a Macbook.

I've worked on Macs and they are very capable indeed but I don't like the idea of locking myself into one system.
I have better idea of what kind of operating specs I need for what I want. The only down side is if I go with a PC I have to give up QLab. Oh well.

Looked around today at Levono, Asus and Toshiba. Some nice models that can double at tablets. Only issue is many of them don't come with built in drives.
I'm not ruling out Macs yet....but I like variety.

Well these just fold over the other way. They're not tablets with an attachable keyboard.
