Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar(9/8/2021)Though it was once a staple genre the comedy film (or at least straight up 100% comedic studio films) have become increasingly rare these days in general and as such there hasn’t really been much of an emerging trend in the genre for the 2010s and 2020s to replace the Apatow-wave from the late 2000s. Occasionally we’ll get a movie trying to evolve from what those Apatow movies were doing but they increasingly didn’t do very well. For the latest attempt Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo try to go even further back to bring about a return of the late-90s/early 2000s trend of comedies about wildly heightened characters in wildly heightened worlds. To the best of my knowledge this one is not based on anything but if you had told me it was an adaptation of a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch I would have entirely believed it. The film has the two actresses playing a pair middle aged Midwestern biddies who talk in Fargo-like accents showing up in Florida and getting enmeshed in some sort of over the top villain’s scheme to destroy the town. It’s all very broad and Austin Powersy. I didn’t really like this brand of comedy back when it was popular and I don’t really like it now and I also found both of these characters to be very annoying. There are some amusing moments and jokes here and there and I suspect it will appeal to those who have fonder memories of that era of comedy. ** out of Five
