Missed this thread despite being in its title.
It's about time that crews got their fair share. I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I don't have to deal with this nonsense as much, but looking back on my early PA days a lot of what we tolerated was just not right, especially for such meager pay.
I'm all for the strike. And everyone I've spoken to in the industry about it is as well.
The production I'm currently on is humming along for now, but things could change fast in the next couple months.

VFX isn't in any union so we aren't part of it per se but everything else around us will shut down. If editors are out we'll hit a wall pretty quickly. That said I've been on the receiving end of some of these long, long shifts. What's funny is that it's the crappy, piece of shit problematic movies that studios are scrambling to salvage that force you to work 20 hour shifts. Look at those poor souls who had years taken off their lives working for weeks on end trying to deliver fucking Cats.

I worked in post before moving to production, and wow do the editors and VFX people have it ROUGH. It was amazing how many long hours and how much penny pinching (I was on a show that DID NOT provide lunch for its employees, only the senior editors so no AEs which is insane!) studios will do to post, but on productions we waste money like crazy. Catered lunches of brisket, a lot of which goes uneaten. Endless supplies of anything you could think of. Whatever the production needs, they get. I have the production office order any supplies we need, no questions asked. In post production, everything came with a "WELL WHAT DO YOU NEED THAT FOR!?" Fucking awful. |
