Yikes, that's even beyond my ridiculous nitpicking.

Paramount has delayed the release of their Top Gun 4K Steelbook until 12/8/2020. All the box art has to be redone. One of these is very wrong. The other is the corrected version that will go to stores.

Anyone familiar with my movie collection (see pics on page 12 if you're not) is aware that I'm pretty much out of room. Despite this state of affairs, I still don't have every movie and box set I want, and eventually the film industry is going to start making more again. In response to this, I've decided to embark on an ambitious project. Today, the one hundred count box of six-disk DVD cases I ordered arrived. The plan is to use Photoshop to create custom case art, and condense my collection significantly. I'll start with the big box sets that take up absurd amounts of room compared to how few disks they actually contain, and go from there.

The last time I did a count was three or four years ago, and it was well over two thousand movies. I've never done a count on the TV series box sets.

I've never counted but I think I might have, maybe, if I'm being very generous, around 200 blu rays, maybe 200 or so DVDs. Taking a look at them it looks like a lot. I can't fathom how it is for these folks who have 3 or 4 thousand. Just thinking about the space you need is giving me anxiety.

My first set to tackle, before and after. In doing my preparatory research, I've discovered that there are a lot of folks out there in the internet who are of like minds with myself. There are plenty of people who have already begun to take on their own overcrowded shelf problem, and are more than happy to share what they've already handled with others such as myself. Some of them make all-new covers, some simply scan in more modern case inserts to replace older sets (which is the case with my Robotech DVDs), and others take already existing inserts and tweak them a bit so that they're of a more agreeable size.

Are you going to purge any movies?

Are you going to purge any movies? If I don't want a movie to be in my library, I don't acquire it. I will replace a fullscreen copy with a widescreen. I will replace a DVD with a Bluray. I will replace a bare bones copy with a Criterion Collection version.

This project certainly didn't turn out the way I expected it to. A couple of weeks ago when I decided to do this, I requested off from work for all of next week so that I would have enough time to figure out how to deal with all of the many obstacles that would no doubt litter my path. The main reason I posted here about doing this at all is so that I'd feel obligated to go through with it, rather than throw in the towel when I got frustrated with things not going as well as I'd hoped. I'm almost completely done, and I haven't even started to make custom case inserts yet. I'm still going to have to learn how to do it, as there are a number of things in my library that are apparently too obscure for anyone else to bother with. Others do already have ready made alternatives, but I'm just not happy with them. Below are the before & after shots everything I managed to finish by the end of the day on Saturday.

Hey now, you’re missing Magnum Force from your Dirty Harry collection young man. Yes, I did notice that when I was putting the Dirty Harry box set together. I don't know how that happened, but Magnum Force was added to the want list, along with a dozen or so other movies that came to my attention while working on this project.

All should be purchased, watched a few times, then thrown away, like the garbage that they are.
