Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Guys, I know Mike Leigh doesn't make the flashiest movies, but he is a fantastic filmmaker who deserves some representation on this list. We didn't put any of his movies on our 21st century ranking and there's basically no way his pre-80s work will make it if we do the 60s and 70s (and I hope we will). Naked is his only shot. And it's an awesome movie with a motherfucker of a great performance from David Thewlis. Like, look at this shit:
Listen to that fantastic dialogue, how Mike Leigh and cinematographer Dick Pope visualize the debate, the quietly stirring music from Andrew Dickson. It's striking, endlessly watchable filmmaking from a master coming into his own and it rocks.
