These Conjuring movies are usually silly horror fantasies but I wasn’t entirely comfortable with this one. They’re all based on the hoaxes of Ed and Lorraine Warren but this one is about a murder trial in which the defendant blamed it on the devil. In real life the guy served 5 years for manslaughter. He’s still alive and still blames the devil. The movie presents him as sympathetic and heroic. Yeah... I don’t know about that and I’d be curious how the victim’s family feels about that. Perhaps this is a topic that PG Cooper should explore in a video essay. Anyway... objectively... the movie is fine. It builds a lore around that murder trial that is quite silly and totally on brand. If you dig these Conjuring movies you’ll likely enjoy this one too. I’ve really grown to enjoy Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in these roles. They should continue making sequels. I’m sure the paycheck is great.

They’re all based on the hoaxes of Ed and Lorraine Warren From my understanding the second one was based on a private event, while the Warrens repeatedly bugged them to let them in on it, and the family kept telling them "Go away!" I totally would have watched that movie.

Did anyone else have the Warren's visit their school or summer program to give a talk with the Raggedy Ann/Andy dolls?

Dude, if that Raggedy Anne doll is half as fucked up as they claim it to be they shouldn't be bringing that thing to schools.

Summer going into 9th grade they showed up at my summer program
They were fabulists, but fantastic storytellers.
They used a doll replica to spook the kids near the end.
They weren't repeats in the next year of the summer program.

For real. And haven't there already been like 40 movies with this exact premise?

I get why they tried something by going with that title, given the premise. But honestly, after seeing the movie and seeing how little the actual court case played into the plot, it just seems even sillier that they did.

I would have respected the movie more had it just turned into the opening court room scene of Ghostbusters 2.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It(6/8/2021)
As theaters reopen I have some resolve to see things on the big screen when possible rather than abuse whatever streaming is available… but I was already decidedly in “wait til it’s on home video” territory with the Conjuring franchise and it would have been silly to arbitrarily wait forty five days to give the new one a watch so HBO Max it was. I think it’s safe to say I made the right choice because this probably the weakest of the mainline Conjuring movies to date and is probably a rung below even a couple of the spinoffs. I’ll give the movie this: it starts on a high. In the opening minutes of the movie we get a pretty intense little exorcism scene, which is a nice change of pace from the series usual pattern of beating around the bush for an hour before any substantial horror happens, but it also leaves the rest of the film struggling to top its opening. But the bigger problem here probably has less to do with the horror (though, make no mistake, the horror is quite mediocre) than it is with the story it chooses to tell. The Conjuring franchise is based around the exploits of the real life Ed and Lorraine Warren, a pair of obvious grifters who exploited the popularity of movies like The Exorcist and the Satanic Panic to sell themselves as “demonologists” and ghost hunters. I’ve found the franchise’s glorification of these people to be pretty gross from the beginning but this movie, which deals with a real life murder trial that these hucksters turned into a circus and very much takes their side (including an uncritical invocation of “devil worshipers” its villain while accepting their ludicrous justification for what was plainly a simple murder) in a way I feel borders on irresponsible. Moreso even than the other two films this really feels like it’s targeted at fundamentalist Christians, albeit in a way that’s cannier and more likely to be acceptable to a wider audience than most “faith based films.” The Warrens are figures that should have been left to be forgotten in the 70s and The Conjuring movies probably could have been left back in the 2010s when movies about haunted houses were still thought to be the height of horror cinema.

I like how in previous movies there is always an exorcism or ritual act to dispel the evil, but in this one Patrick Wilson is all "I'm gonna break shit with this sledgehammer."

Even I, a fairly big fan of the first two Conjuring movies, was a little reticent at the prospect of a third entry into the franchise that wasn't directed by James Wan, who let's face it, brought a lot to these movies. And to get right down to it, I think this third Conjuring film (lamely subtitled The Devil Made Me Do It) is the weakest of the flagship series. But even still, I found enough to appreciate and like here. It won't do anything to win you over if you've been dismissive of the franchise up to now, but for those like me who've appreciated what they've had to offer, this third film still does enough right. Most of all, I did like this movie's attempt to change up the structure somewhat. Whereas the first two films are definitely traditional haunting movies, this one instead takes the approach of a murder mystery/police procedural, with The Warrens investigating a murder case that has supernatural elements. And I honestly kind of dug that. Granted, the movie never really is able to match the degree of tension and atmosphere that the first two had, partly because new director Michael Chaves may try his best to match Wan's sensibilities but can't quite get there. Yet, to his credit, he still gets some sequences out of this that manage to deliver decently on the kind of stuff you're at a Conjuring movie for while keeping the plot itself engaging. The best sequence is arguably the opening, an exorcism sequence that sets up the main plot and also introduces an element of physical distress for Patrick Wilson's Ed that the rest of the movie follows through on for the most part. The other horror sequences are about what you'd expect and are serviceable, but again lacking that certain...flair that James Wan just instinctively has. What isn't diminished, though, is the power of the central relationship between the Warrens, still portrayed excellently by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. This movie wisely still recognizes they're the heart of these stories and keeps that aspect intact. And of course, Wilson and Farmiga haven't lost a step in these roles. Also, it features John Noble in a supporting role, and having John Noble is always a plus. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It may have a stupid title and fall a little short of the first two, but it still works for what it is as a solidly spooky studio horror film.
