When it comes to certain writers/directors who have careers like those of Taylor Sheridan, after a while, new movies from them come with certain high expectations. I mean, we're talking about the guy who in one form or another, is responsible for the Sicario movies, Hell or High Water, Wind River and the TV series Yellowstone, so it's only natural. But even filmmakers like Sheridan are allowed "easy days at the office", which is how his latest, Those Who Wish Me Dead, can most readily be described. But if a movie like this can be categorized as a filmmaker's weakest film, it's still a pretty good one at that. It's safe to say that amongst some of the more recent straightforward action movies, which include Nobody and Mortal Kombat, that I've seen, I've enjoyed Those Who Wish Me Dead the most. Especially in comparison with Taylor Sheridan's other movies, there's not a whole lot of depth to it at all and is really just a simple action thriller. But even then, with someone like Sheridan at the helm, it's executed with a fair degree of skill and excitement, with it having some of the white knuckle thrills of something like Sicario. Even though the movie is "just" an action thriller when you get right down to it, Sheridan still manages to inject just enough character investment into it to keep things from feeling like they're cruising on autopilot. Characters like those of Angelina Jolie's, Jon Bernthal's and Finn Little's are given solid development and charm and bring a certain gravitas to the film that helps the dramatic beats land effectively. And as I already said, the action sequences have some of that same intensity from those of Sicario thanks to Sheridan's direction. Also, Sheridan seems to wisely be aware that what he's making here isn't anything that needs to try to transcend its genre roots, so he doesn't try to force it into any other boxes. He knows he's making a 90's-style thriller, and that's what he delivers, and successfully so. The movie may get a little overstuffed -- the inclusion of a raging forest fire set by the killers ultimately seems kind of unnecessary/like overkill -- but again, Sheridan keeps the movie tense enough throughout to make it work. Yes, I watched Those Who Wish Me Dead on HBO Max instead of going to theaters to, but you know what? I think this is the kind of movie that lends itself well to watching it that way, too. That's not a knock against the movie at all, cause again it's good, just a way of saying that it's the kind of movie that gets its point across well no matter how you view it.

I thought this movie was directed by Ty Sheridan, star of Doomsday’s Ready Player One. I’m like, “oh wow, kid’s directing now?” But nope. It’s the Sicario guy.

Have we talked about that show yet? I only watched the first season and it's pretty ridiculous. Some really good stuff mixed in with almost laughable forced conflict.

I recently watched Season 1 of Yellowstone finally. Sloooooooooooow start, but yeah...a decent amount of stuff in there that I quite liked, but just as many other things that made me go, "...Okay...." Supposedly the show gets a lot better with Season 2. I literally finished watching Episode 1 of Season 2 just about half an hour ago and...jury's still out. I'm willing to stick it out another season at least, because of the stuff in there I do like.

It's like that show Longmire. 90% of the audience are flannel dressed men in their mid-50s.

Those Who Wish Me Dead(6/1/2021) Angelina Jolie is an actor who in some way feels like a bit of a relic of a time when “movie stars” were enough to make a movie bankable, but we now live in a time when franchises make movies rather than stars and outside of her work in the Maleficent franchise she hasn’t done much high profile acting at all in the last ten years opting instead to try directing and producing. But apparently she was feeling nostalgic or something so she took a very traditional starring role in a very traditional star vehicle called Those Who Wish Me Dead which has resulted in rather mediocre results. The film, which has a much cooler title than it deserves, is set in Montana and deals with a situation where a pair of assassins have been sent against a forensic accountant who has evidence against organized crime and his son and this pursuit ends up colliding with a sheriff and his wife as well as a forest fire fighter played by Jolie. The film was directed by Taylor Sheridan, who made some fairly interesting thrillers as a screenwriter (Sicario, Hell or High Water) and as a director (Wind River), but this feels like a step backwards for him. There’s still some clear competence behind the camera and Sheridan elicits some decent performances and brings some workable action scenes to the film, but the whole thing lacks any real vision or flair and just generally lacks anything memorable and noteworthy. The whole thing feels like a throwback to the late 90s or maybe early 2000s. “Die Hard in a forest” wouldn’t be a perfect analogy since there are only two villains but it kind of speaks to the era of thriller this is harkening back to. The movie likely will provide passable enough entertainment if watched through free streaming on a Saturday afternoon or something, but temper all expectations.
