First hour is pretty fun, last 30 minutes is pretty laughable. Pratt can't carry the serious parts of the storyline. Alien design is pretty cool though.
5.5/10

Sounds about right. Doesn't look very original. Blah blah, for my daughter.

This movie is pretty much the epitome of derivative.

I watched about an hour of it so far, it's very, very silly. Definitely a movie that I think is benefitting from being on streaming, if people spent $20 on this they'd be pissed.

I think this is why the Rotten Tomatoes crowd have become so passive lately in their scores. People can just shrug off the problems with a lot of these streaming titles because they haven't expelled much effort in the first place to view them. If they stink, ah well. You look back at movies from 15-20 years ago, and how few of them are rated in the upper 90s compared to now and it's crazy. You've got movies like Godzilla vs. Kong with a 76% and you just have to wonder what the fuck is happening. If Tomorrow War had come out then, it probably is hovering in the high 30s range. Saving Private Ryan - 93% The Fellowship of the Ring - 91% The Social Network - 96% There Will be Blood - 91% No Country for Old Men - 93% In the Heights - 95%

Genre flicks have always been on a sliding scale. I'd argue things are more accurate now based on that lense alone.
People aren't bringing the same critical thinking to Kong vs Zilla compared to say a there will be blood. Which is a good thing because these two movies arent competing.
Now go with tomorrow war against Kong v Zilla and it's more accurate, both monster movies, both action movies, and I'd say the critics on this sliding scale got it pretty close to perfect.
But musicals never made sense, people always been over the moon with trash musicals.

But musicals never made sense, people always been over the moon with trash musicals. I get that; critics are going into an action movie with a different mindset than an awards-contending drama. At the same time I think the space has become oversaturated with critics that aren't qualified enough in their jobs or publications to be contributing to the overall scores. You have to have balance. Not every critic should be stuffy and ranting about auteur theory. You need some to balance it out and examine films as entertainment pieces as well. But something is off when you look at the top movies of the 1990s and 2000s and their scores and compare them to the lesser films earning identical or better scores coming out today, and I think it's just a combination of too many critics and the breezy nature of watching and reviewing that surrounds streaming today. Like Doomsday said, if you go to the theater and shell out a ticket that costs about what you pay a month in a streaming service and that movie is mediocre, you're probably gonna offer more critical weight towards it. When it pops up on Prime and you casually watch it on a Friday night with no expectations, that's going to be a different experience that alters your own toughness on it. I have no evidence for any of this except seeing the number of 90%+ movies and television climb on Rotten Tomatoes year after year. A 95%+ was somewhat of a rarity not long ago, and now it doesn't feel so much like that's the case anymore.
