Sounds like it tapped into the 80s perfectly.

He-Man was actually Arnold Schwarzenegger with blonde hair. Mattel/Hasbro/Whatever wanted to sell Conan action figures, but couldn't for whatever reason, so they created He-Man instead.

A Conan figure would've been sweet, especially if it came with his homies from "Conan the Destroyer" with Wilt Chamberlain, the Amazon girl from "A View to a Kill", and of course the Chinese "wizard" whose powers in the movie were basically just lifting up doors, lol.

That movie is basically what He-Man is.

Maybe I should check it out, I'm only a little late to that party.

I watched Cutthroat Island, like, four years ago. For what it was, I enjoyed it.

Maybe I should check it out, I'm only a little late to that party. I meant the cartoon, not the movie. The movie is bullshit. He-Man gets transported to 1980's Earth and needs the help of Courtney Cox (from Friends) to get back home. Frank Langella is the ONLY reason to watch the movie. He rivals Raul Julia in the category of great acting in an awful movie. I watched Cutthroat Island, like, four years ago. For what it was, I enjoyed it. I'm not surprised. You love Pirates of the Caribbean and Cutthroat Island is, more or less, the same thing.

It sounds like the movie was a mix of Conan and the Howard the Duck movie. If He-Man gets dumped in Cleveland then it's a dead ringer.

JibbsNorth Korea and Cuba were in the news a lot this past week. And you know which movie featured both countries? DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002)THINGS I LIKE:- The Pre-Title Sequence - Bond imprisoned and tortured - The North Korean angle to the story - Halle Berry in that bikini - The villain is a lot better than I remembered. The dude that played him is a good actor. - David Arnold's music is a lot different than I remembered. I recall it being more techno-heavy, but I guess I was just thinking of the gunbarrell sequence and a few random cues. In general, it was his usual Brosnan era Bond music. It's really good stuff. THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:Everything else.

DoomsdaySnoBorderZeroDeexanJustinROAD HOUSE (1989)THE GREATEST YEARBOOK PHOTO EVER TAKEN.I watched Road House a few times as a kid. My grandfather and uncle are fans of it. And when Family Guy did its infamous spoof, I knew it was time for me to re-visit this 80's gem. That was 5 years ago! Sorry it took me so long. The point is, I finally got around to re-watching it, and I was a bit disappointed. For the first 90 minutes... there's a few bar fights, some naked chicks and Sam Elliot as the laid-back mentor of Patrick Swayze's character. Most of the running time was spent on some lame story about a small town being abused by a shady businessman. I'm not against the concept. It just wasn't very well-executed. I'm assuming the 1988 writers strike got in the way. But then the last 30 minutes happened and I dramatically looked at an invisible camera and said, "Road House!" C+

I remember seeing Die Another Day in theaters and thinking 'whatever that was, I enjoyed it better than The World Is Not Enough.' It would be interesting to watch them both again after 10+ years but they're both at the bottom of the Bond barrel so I'm not really chomping at the bit.

I still think "Die Another Day" is the worst of them all, just nothing good about it at all. The villain was the worst in the series, and the CGI has aged very, very badly already.

I have yet to start the Moore films yet, so I've got a ways to go.

Not even Bond being a North Korean prisoner and getting tortured on a daily basis?

Eh, I think the stupid face-changing bad guy overshadowed anything half-way decent in that one. Other bad Bond films have at least something, "Die Another Day" doesn't have anything to set itself apart other than the invisible car which is poorly executed anyways.

The face-changing, race-changing villain didn't bother me too much.

This isn't me re-evaluating a bad movie, just re-evaluating a movie I really enjoyed but didn't want to make a separate thread for it.
Gran Torino
I loved this movie when it first came out and still stand by much of the praise I gave it. Clint Eastwood who was 78 when this was released carries this movie and is very convincing as a crotchety old man who finally is able to connect with someone in his life. I was shocked that Eastwood wasn't nominated for an acting Oscar for this because I thought he did a good job and that the Academy fawns over just about anything Eastwood does (at least they did in the early to mid 00's). After rewatching I found much of my admiration was in tact, I still found many things funny and poignant, but it's also terribly heavy handed. The acting among the Hmong non-actors goes without saying but the lines they were given don't help. 'Shut up, stupid' is one of the many 2nd grade zingers thrown between seemingly hardened gang members. The scene with the black guys harassing the Asian girl and her white friend (Eastwood's son Scott Reeves who I also went to college with) is cringe worthy. The real vomit inducing stuff comes from Eastwood's scenes with the local priest, a character whose sole purpose is to wax philosophical in ways that priest never, ever do. Coming from someone raised Catholic, I've never heard a priest once refer to anyone as their 'child,' 'son' or 'part of their flock.' When he's not doing that he's asking Eastwood to talk about life and death in the most inopportune times. As much as I enjoy Eastwood's diverse array of films and his linear, traditional style of filmmaking, he often soaks his films with the themes he's trying to convey (similar to my Chris Nolan criticisms). Gran Torino commits those same crimes. While I still enjoy it, it did lose some of its luster.
