The list is made, I'll get to the list but first an explanation. I took all the top ten lists and gave points for each movie on each list. Putting a movie at # one on a list gave it ten points, #2 gave it 9 points and so on down to #10 which gives it a mere one. The more points the higher on the big list.
so without further ado here's the list
(all summaries are plagiarized from various people at IMDB.com)
10. A Sun (20 Points)
A family of four fractures under the weight of unmet expectations, unexpected tragedy, and uncompromising pride.
CS Voice: "Chung Mong-hong shows such a deft sense of control, patiently building the drama slowly across the near two and a half hour runtime. It's clear from the beginning A Sun is quality, with the understated performances and precise visual storytelling, but it's only over time the full emotional weight of the story really sets in." -
PG Cooper 9. Palm Spring (20 Points)
Stuck in a time loop, two wedding guests develop a budding romance while living the same day over and over again.
CS Voice: "Yeah, i liked it for the most part. I'm a fan of Samberg's. While this is no Popstar, it's still really good and a nice, fresh take on the time loop idea." -
donny 8. The Invisible Man (31 Points)When Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.
CS Voice: "I kind of fucking loved this. The suspense -- and Elisabeth Moss -- is off-the-charts good in this. An excellent horror/suspense thriller, but also an effective picture of the aftereffects of an abusive relationship." -
PhantomKnight 7. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (32 Point)
The story of 7 people on trial stemming from various charges surrounding the uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.
CS Voice: "Really solid. Great script, performances, the whole shebang. I really like Eddie redmane in particular (not something I usually say). Frank Langella was also strong as the questionable judge. I liked the ending quite a lot." -
IanTheCool 6. Tenet (34 Points)
Armed with only one word, Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, a Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.
CS Voice: "I'm not surprised this is a polarizing movie (I stated so in my review you didn't read) even amongst people on these boards and will be largely rejected by mainstream audiences. I have some friends who liked it, others who didn't. No one seems to love this film or outright hate it, and the funny thing is everyone seems to agree on the same strengths and weaknesses." -
SnoBorderZero 5. Mank (39 Points)
1930's Hollywood is reevaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane (1941).
CS Voice: "Great performances, fantastic staging mimicking the old sets, and compelling dialogue" -
thebtskink 4. Nomadland (46 Points)A woman in her sixties who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.
CS Voice: " I think it might also be kind of a perfectly positioned movie for a movie like 2020 in that it’s a movie that focuses on national hardships but not in a way that feels hopeless and is in many ways more about surviving hard times than enduring them." - Dracula
3. Sound of Metal (51 Points)
A heavy-metal drummer's life is thrown into freefall when he begins to lose his hearing.
CS Voice: "Thought this was a delight." -
frankyt 2. Soul (65 Points)
After landing the gig of a lifetime, a New York jazz pianist suddenly finds himself trapped in a strange land between Earth and the afterlife.
CS Voice: " My personal opinion, as someone based in Los Angeles where endless numbers of people try and fail to reach their goals, is that people often don't have a sense of meaning. They might have career goals or things they want to do but when it comes to what they want out of life, that question is something that a lot of people don't really consider. I think there's a difference there and that lack of meaning is that missing piece that makes people feel that sense of emptiness. That's something that Soul tries to explore and I think is something a lot of viewers will be able to relate to." -
Doomsday 1. Minari (72 Points)
A Korean family starts a farm in 1980s Arkansas.
CS Voices:
"Knowing that the end credit song was sung by the wife makes this all the more poetic for me." -
thebtskink "This was a phenomenal film. Definitely my favorite of 2020." -
SnoBorderZero "This was a nice little respite... Thought the grandma and the wife were stellar (and obviously the little boy)." -
frankyt "It’s keenly observed and thoughtful cinema constructed well and what it lacks in novelty it makes up for with truthfulness." - Dracula
"Minari is a unique look at a family as it struggles to get to its feet. It's not overly preachy nor does it try to make you look at life through a different perspective, it's a simple and quite touching film about adjustment and perseverance." -
Doomsday "For all the film's delicacy, there is an undercurrent of conflict that permeates through. The phrase "slice of life" often implies a certain plotless affair where not much really happens, and while Minari isn't exactly plot-driven, it is eventful. What I keep coming back to though is the vibrancy and warmth writer/director Lee Isaac Chung brings in the material. In its own modest way, Minari is the most touching cinematic experience I've had from anything in 2020 and I can't wait to see it again. Frankly, I didn't want it to end." -
