Critics have often accused Tim Burton of ignoring storytelling in favor of strong visuals. To me, those critics miss the point. For Burton, the visuals tell the story. He's just that type of filmmaker. But with Big Fish, Burton throws those critics a bone by making a movie that's all about storytelling. And even then, critics still complained. I remember Roger Ebert saying, "what's the point of this movie?" The point, Mr. Ebert, is the power of storytelling. And also the imagination it takes to tell a good one. Even if the truth is hidden behind a lot of bull s--t.
