Love it and I'm happy to see it so high in your list. I have a couple of titles left to catch up with but I think that's my favourite movie of the year. I'll bite the $20 VOD rental bullet if I have to. That and A Sun are two ones that are must watch on my remaining 2020 list.

Dracula could you have imagined ten years ago that a Pixar movie would beat the likes of David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, and Charlie Kaufman in one of your top ten lists? Not that I'm complaining, the movie is absolutely deserving, it's just an interesting change. As always, excellent work. It was certainly a bummer to have seen less of your nominees than I usually do, but that's certainly not your fault. Moreover, a lot of my favourites did pretty darn well. Hopefully Nomadland becomes available to me sooner than later.

Not that I'm complaining, the movie is absolutely deserving, it's just an interesting change. Coming right off the original Pixar marathon I could have seen it, but then they spent a decade failing to make the next Wall-E and by 2020 it actually seemed less likely.

Going back to an older award debate, listening to them both again, I might actually like Mank's score more than Soul's. If nothing else, it feels like the more creative leap for Reznor and Ross. And I might also like Emile Mosseri's work on Minari even more than both, which as a Nine Inch Nails fan, is difficult to admit.

It might feel like more of a creative leap for Reznor and Ross, but I wouldn't say it's more of a leap in terms of film scoring in general, in fact it's a deliberate pastiche of the scores of a previous era. Certainly nothing wrong with that, but compared to Soul, which really feels different from what most film composers give us and really elevates that movie I don't think it's really all that close. As far as Minari... full disclosure, that was kind of nominated at the last minute when I learned that Nomadland's score was going to ineligible for mostly being pieces composed years ago and reused for the film. Minari's score was sort of something I recognized more when I reviewed it after the fact than I did when I was watching the actual movie.

That's a good point, but I also kinda skip through the entire jazz portion of the score when I listen to it even if I recognize why those pieces needed to be there. But, in the context of the film, it definitely does add a ton. Oh man, I definitely felt the score while watching. That was one of the film's biggest surprises for me.

Best Musical Performance
This music scene category focuses on scenes in movie where characters on screen actively perform a song. The category focuses on the entire scene in question and isn’t necessarily meant to be an objective selection of the best singers or performers so much as a focus on the best integration of music into a film’s story. frankyt and I chose the winner for you.
