Sometime last year, We Got This Covered was reporting that Legendary and HBO Max were in talks to develop a TV series set in the MonsterVerse. Since it was WGTC reporting it, everyone ignored it because it was likely pulled out of their ass.
Turns out there was a half truth to it AND they pulled it out of their ass!

Netflix, not HBO Max, has greenlit an anime series from Legendary taking place on Skull Island, following a group of castaways surviving on the island. Netflix and Legendary have a pre-existing relationship, as they distribute Legendary's reboot of Lost in Space and will also distribute Legendary's anime based on the video game Tomb Raider, which was also announced today.
(Incidentally, I had initially misread this article as a Tomb Raider ON Skull Island series and was nerding out before I realized they were two separate projects)
This is not the first Kong animated series. In the 1960's there was The King Kong Show children's series by Rankin Bass, which spun off the live action theatrical film King Kong Escapes. Following the success of Godzilla: The Series, the year 2000 saw Kong: The Animated Series, which spun off two direct to video films, Kong: King of Atlantis and Kong: Return to the Jungle. Netflix also distributed the 2016 animated series Kong: King of the Apes. There is also a direct to video animated musical from Warner Brothers titled The Mighty Kong in 1998, which was just a child friendly retelling of the original King Kong film.
Netflix also distributes anime based on Godzilla and Ultraman, with Godzilla: Singularity Point debuting later this year.
