Wasn't Spamalot basically just Monty Python and the Holy Grail but with some songs added? That's... already a movie. It's not really different than Little Shop of Horrors, or Hairspray.

It's not really different than Little Shop of Horrors, or Hairspray. Neither of those movies were considered comedy classics before they were turned into musicals though. They were both based on movies with a strong cult following, made money for the studio, and didn't cost a lot of money to produce. The fact that they weren't comedy classics isn't Paramount's concern. They need a movie that makes some money, which is something they haven't been able to do very often lately.

The Producers (2005) is not something you want to replicate. I agree 100%. I watched it in theatres and people walked out. But we can learn from it. Improve on it.
