Isn't there still a last blockbuster? I feel like I see a human interest article about it every couple of months.

Isn't there still a last blockbuster? I feel like I see a human interest article about it every couple of months. There’s one Blockbuster left that is basically a tourist attraction. But Family Video was still a legit business due in part to its integration with Marco’s Pizza. Get a pizza and grab a movie or video game on your way out. But I guess Covid ended all of that.

There was a Family Video about fifteen minutes from my house, but it was in a neighborhood I had no other reason to go to, and so I never bothered. I think they closed two or three years ago. I'm amazed the chain lasted this long. There are simply too many far more convenient options available to everyone.

There are simply too many far more convenient options available to everyone. These businesses ride-or-died rental way too hard. Everyone here will still walk into a Best Buy to purchase a Blu-Ray or 4K or to get a video game console like a PS5. I don’t know why Blockbuster (and the rest of the clan) didn’t just downsize and focus on selling. They could have been the one true brick & mortar rival to GameStop. I remember when Blockbuster was going out of business, each time a store held a liquidation sale, they’d get swamped. Clearly, these are all potential customers and there’s still enough people willing to own physical media. But what do I know?

Odds are they knew they were never going to be able to compete with the prices at Target/Walmart/Best Buy, much less Amazon, as a brick and mortar place and I'm guessing that the used market on movies is generally less lucrative than video games since they're less expensive in the first place and there's less of a "play it for a couple weeks then sell it used" dynamic.

Odds are they knew they were never going to be able to compete with the prices at Target/Walmart/Best Buy, much less Amazon 100%. We saw what happened to F.Y.E. and Spec Music. Then you have Circuit City, Waldenbooks and Borders which also went out-of-business. But I think if Blockbuster had downsized to a GameStop, it might have survived. People still want physical media but you gotta treat it as a niche product.

The size of the physical media section at Target and Best Buy is a shadow of it's former self. My local Half-Price Books has a wider selection of movies than the average big box store.

Family Video wasn't in my neck of the woods. Blockbuster, Hollywood Video and Warehouse were my jams.

The size of the physical media section at Target and Best Buy is a shadow of it's former self. A fact that is depressing as hell. That’s why a specialty store would be super popular. We went from spoiled to scraps.
