Dawn Wells, mostly known for playing Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island died this week of complications from COVID19. While not the very first pretty girl to turn my eye (that honor goes to Yvonne Craig's Batgirl), she was certainly one of the first half dozen.

This news left me pretty gutted. Gilligan's Island was such a huge part of my childhood.

I watched it a ton as a kid. Do they even air Gilligan's Island anymore? I doubt anyone under 25 has seen a single episode.

It's one of those weird little broadcast networks that started showing up after the switch to digital that exist on the stations with a decimal point in them. I'm sure there are plenty of kids who've seen Gilligan's Island. Not most of them, but some. Our family used to check out DVDs of old TV shows from the local public library when the kids were younger. They absolutely loved Land of the Lost, bad green screen and all. The oldest appreciates his exposure to older series, since he's better able to understand more of the obscure pop culture references in Family Guy.

Check your local listings. Yes. 6 hours of Seinfeld. 6 hours of Friends. 6 hours of The Office. 6 years of The Big Bang Theory.

I've got pretty much every show that ever made it to syndication, but D/FW is a major market. Gilligan's Island, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Green Acres, Hogan's Heroes, MASH, Sanford and Son, All in the Family, Cheers, etc. It's all there for anyone interested.

But you’re talking about that MeTV channel. Those shows aren’t playing on regular ABC/CBS/NBC/Fox stations and they’re not in regular cable channels like TBS and Comedy Central. Gilligan’s Island used to air on TNT and on Nick-at-Nite back in the 1990’s when Doomsday, 1godzillafan and myself were children. Gilligan’s Island was a 30 year old show at that point. It’s the equivalent of Seinfeld & Friends nowadays. But the difference is, channels would still air I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners and Three Stooges shorts. Most TV channels these days won’t air anything older than Seinfeld except for the Golden Girls (which is popular with the Zoomers for whatever reason) and that’s because the syndication market isn’t what it used to be. Back in the 90’s you couldn’t air 6 hours of Gilligan’s Island and 6 hours of I Love Lucy and call it a day. They had to air a wide variety of programming to attract as many viewers as possible. So TNT would air back-to-back (an hour block) of Gilligan’s Island and then switch to CHiPs cause some bored housewife wanted to masturbate to Erik Estrada at 9 in the morning.
