After director Aneesh Chaganty's debut thriller, Searching, I almost immediately began anticipating his next film, and here it is with Run, which was supposed to be released theatrically before being bought by Hulu. And Hulu seems like an appropriate landing place for Run, since it shares DNA with their highly-praised limited series The Act. And that's probably the best jumping-off point here. Now, I haven't seen The Act, but I know what it's about, and Run has a very similar story. The story of Run isn't exactly a hard one to predict, even if you go in blind, having seen no trailers. But part of the suspense here seems to hinge on you going in completely blind, due to the way it builds up to and reveals its suspense-inducing twist. I mean...even without knowing too much going in, anybody who's seen enough movies should and will be able to guess where things are headed once the film settles into its rhythm, so the question then becomes, how invested does it get you in the characters? Honestly, not a whole lot, but that's not really a bad thing in this case. Mainly because it's the filmmaking that really bolsters this movie. That and the performances. With Searching, Aneesh Chaganty did a great job of building tension just through computer and phone screens, and here with a more conventional filming approach, he proves just as effective. He stages a number of scenes here that evoke a more simple, classical style of building suspense, and that helps you get caught up in the whole situation. Not to mention the impressive debut of Kiera Allen, who provides really solid work as the desperate character at the center of everything. Once things start to turn for her, Allen does a pretty great job of selling her character's tidal wave of realization, confusion and fear. And then of course, Sarah Paulson further solidifies the fact that she knows how to play quietly calculating unhinged women. Run isn't as good as Searching. I feel it could've done better work in fleshing out its characters and providing more sympathy for them, but as a tight, 90-minute thriller, it gets the job done and is fun to watch.

Run(1/2/2021) This Run movie really came out of nowhere for me… to the point where the first handful of times I heard the title I had assumed it was referring to the HBO show of the same title that aired earlier this year. It doesn’t have a name director behind it, it hasn’t had a festival run or gotten awards buzz, and Hulu hasn’t given it much of an advertising campaign that I’ve noticed. It’s something that easily could have gotten lost in the shuffle but it did have one asset that did get it some notice and that was a juicy if rather silly lead performance by Sarah Paulson, who is playing a single mother to a teenage paraplegic who comes to start suspecting that she actually doesn’t have as many health problems as her mother has been telling her. So what we have here is a high concept thriller that’s something of a mix of Misery with the Munchausen by proxy story element that’s been infiltrating cinema ever since the Gypsy Rose Blanchard case brought that particular disorder to popular attention. Paulson certainly chews up the scenery pretty well and Kiera Allen is pretty good as a protagonist and the movie is generally well shot and paced. That having said, while there isn’t anything inherently “wrong” with the movie it doesn’t really have a whole lot going for it either. The psychological dynamic here is not particularly deep and ultimately just feels like a pretty routine “psycho lady stalks someone” thriller and its slim 90 minute runtime really doesn’t give it much time to really build tension up or give us anything terribly memorable as it heads toward a slight twist ending that isn’t as impactful as the film thinks it is. If you need a time killer there are worse options than this but I doubt I’ll remember this thing in two weeks. **1/2 out of Five

This movie hit all the right spots.
One piece in the basement confrontation baffles me as to the inclusion. The main girl is believable in the role, and you can tell Paulson is having a ton of fun.
The rooftop scene is gripping as hell, the score is great, and the direction of reveals to the score is dope.
I've had a shit week, 16 hr work days weds-sat, and this was just what I needed.
It might be my current favorite Hitchock ape since 1990. Certainly better than that Shia LeBouf garbage.
Yes, I'm drunk.
8/10.
