Unhinged(12/17/2020)Unhinged will probably be forever remembered as being more or less the first movie to play theaters during the late summer re-opening as it started showing in the weeks before even Tenet had opened. In some ways this gave it more of a spotlight than it otherwise might have had; I certainly hadn’t heard of it until it turned into the only movie left on the release schedule and it’s the kind of low to mid budget semi-high concept thrillers do not generally hold an overly visible place in film culture these days. While I’m going to have rather mixed feelings about any movie barreling forward with a theatrical release during a pandemic I would say that if any movie was going to do that this was probably the right one to do it as it’s a functional if rather disposable movie about a woman who finds her life being turned upside down when she flips off a guy in traffic who turns out to be a psychotic killer Russell Crowe who decides to make it his mission to stalk her and make her life hell the rest of the day. From there the film is an enjoyable B-movie but not a particularly memorable one. I think Crowe is king of the problem here; this is a part that basically exists to accommodate scenery chewing and chew scenery he does, but I’m not sure that either he or the character are quite interesting enough to carry the whole movie through over the top villainy. It’s not a bad movie at all, if you want something decent to watch on a lazy Saturday it will do, but it probably could have been more with a little more care and inspiration. *** out of Five

A cross between Duel and Falling Down, Unhinged is one of those movies that's aware that it's a B-movie, is comfortable in that skin, and is all the better for it. This is a solid, entertaining, savagely fun 81 minutes of B-movie thrills bolstered by an equally fun lead performance by Russell Crowe that certainly lives up to the title. I don't think anybody else will particularly care who wrote the screenplay, but I noticed it was penned by Carl Ellsworth, a guy who also wrote the 2005 Wes Craven thriller Red Eye. Similar to that movie, Unhinged has a very streamlined, focused narrative that packs as many thrills as it can into its short runtime, and I just can't deny that its no-nonsense attitude got me caught up in the movie. Despite having such brutal violence on display, there was certainly a sense of fun I took in this experience. The movie briefly flirts with attempting to have some sort of commentary on road rage, but it wisely comes to its senses and abandons that for more B-movie thrills. Unhinged is definitely more aware of what it is than a movie like Falling Down, which I've always found to be overrated, so that right there helps ensure that this movie is more effective in what it sets out to do.
