Freaky Review (2020) Starring Vince Vaughn

The Happy Death Day movies were entertaining little twists on the slasher genre that established Christopher Landon as a gifted storyteller in terms of combining other genres with horror -- chief among them comedy -- and Freaky furthers that while also feeling like Landon's best achievement to date at that. Look, I'm not going to sit here and pretend that Freaky is any sort of deep, insightful or mind-blowing take on the slasher genre -- but it IS one that's a lot of damn fun and a love letter to slasher movies with a unique spin and lots of laughs. And this year especially, that feels like a welcome thing. So, yes, Freaky reimagines the Freaky Friday concept as a slasher movie while throwing in heapings of comedy and gore, and it works. Maybe a little better than it should. That's probably because Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn do such good work in the body-swapped roles, with Vaughn making a welcome return to comedy after going dark for the past couple years and Newton convincingly playing a disturbed psychopath. Both are very believable as the other, and the movie especially gets lots of genuine laughs from Vaughn's interactions with Newton's character's high school friends, as well as from Newton-as-Vaughn's interactions with people around the school. But most importantly, Christopher Landon makes sure these characters have loads of charm and likability, which adds to the energy of the movie as a whole. There's also nice little touches like how the movie shows Vaughn's character struggling to adapt to the shortcomings of a teenage girl's body as he's trying to carry out murders while in it that also go a long way.

Watch it again. You might get it this time.
