Question for the group. The random number generator has mostly sent us to out of the way picks, but if I end up drawing a number that corresponds to a super well-known album that everyone already knows like Dark Side of the Moon or something do you guys just want to roll with that or would you rather I draw another number? I wouldn't mind throwing a retro review on a well known album

I actually did a little suicide deep dive after I got theirs on my own random number generator (been doing 2-3 albums on Fridays if it's slow), I wonder if it's the same website I used... Becuase I also got james browns numbers too.
Random my ass!

Some of these Suicide songs aren't that far from Wesley Willis.
How the hell did this album make it into the top 500?

Now Frankie Teardrop is on.
Why is this album on the list?

Why is this album on the list? Historical relevance. This kind of electronic minimalism had never really been done before and they kind of pioneered a certain gothy aesthetic that would be pretty influential going forward. There's a very long list of bands that list them as an influence. Having said that, when I listened to the album their limitations became kind of apparent. The songs all kind of sound the same and a lot of their lyrics outside of Frankie Teardrop are cryptic to the point of meaninglessness. Sometimes when you strip down your sound too much you really aren't left with a lot. Then again, sometimes you're in the mood for something that literally sounds like hell, and they're there to provide that.

I'm gonna have to echo Drac on this. The first couple of songs were intriguing but eventually you "get" what the album has to over and it becomes a bit tedious. I don't think the music is bad so much as it doesn't necessarily benefit from being listened to on its own. Used as source music by the right filmmaker I could see these adding a lot of mood and energy to a scene but as its own piece it's more interesting in bits than as a whole.

The last couple of picks have sort of been duds in terms of turnout, but I'll give it another shot. Random number generator gives us #112, which is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John

The last couple of picks have sort of been duds in terms of turnout, but I'll give it another shot. Random number generator gives us #112, which is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John I’m a playlist junkie and, unless a song pops up on the radio or whatever, I listen to Elton John almost exclusively through the playlists I’ve curated over the years. So from the top of my head, I couldn’t give the consensus on any Elton John album except for the Lion King soundtrack, which is a beloved soundtrack, and my introduction to the man. Anyway, going through the tracklist of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, it has a lot of my favorite Elton John songs, but it also has a handful of songs I don’t give a fuck about. — Funeral for a Friend is alright. — Candle in the Wind, I never cared for. It’s weird to associate this song with this album since it’s now widely considered the Princess Diana song. — Bennie and the Jets is of course a goddamn classic. — Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a Beatles knockoff but I love it. I usually put it as the closing track in my Elton playlists. — This Song Has No Title is a darn good filler... but it’s a filler. — Sweet Painted Lady, I fucking love that song. — The Ballad of Danny Bailey is great, although in badly need of a remix. — Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting is... well... I don’t know... kinda shit... but also kinda good. If I’m putting together an Elton exclusive playlist, then yeah, throw it in. But I would never mix this song with songs by other artists. The fact this shit gets played on the radio is embarrassing. Why would you do that? — Harmony is fucking great. The rest I don’t care for. As of now. Things change.

I like the standard Elton John tracks but Goodbye Yellow Brick Road might be the only album of his that I have. I'm with Neverending on most of those notes although I do like Candle in the Wind. And Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting is catchy as shit.

Captain Fantastic is pretty good and I’m an unapologetic fan of disco-era Elton John: But... yeah... Elton is more of a Greatest Hits artist than an album artist. Other than Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and the Lion King soundtrack, is there an Elton John album that people under 70-years-old give a fuck about? Closest thing I can think of is his 1983 “comeback album” To Low for Zero and the ‘84 follow-up Breaking Hearts, which ended up being his only relevant 80’s output.

There are people who also swear by Honky Chateau, but I'm more in the Greatest Hits camp with him as well so I can't really speak to it.

There are people who also swear by Honky Chateau .... I guess.... Rocketman is a classic. And I do like Honky Cat. But what else is there? Mona Lisa’s and the Mad Hatters? That album pales in comparison to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Night and day, really. People could make a better argument with Tumbleweed Connection. It has no hits whatsoever, but it’s a solid concept album. The only time, in their heyday, when Elton and Bernie didn’t care at all about getting a song on the radio.

On my first listen in long time right now.
Absolutely icon 4-5 song start to this album.
On Benny and the Jets, Elton John does this thing when he's singing down from falsetto to a lower octave, where the elongated "oh" sounds sublime.
