You owe me so many apologies. Anyway, I listened to the album and it's pretty great. I think most people here know I listen primarily to Heavy Metal and as such I have a bit of a hard time going back to pre-Sabbath rock. But I find doing so with Little Richard a lot easier. Track after track is just bursting with energy and there's an aggressive quality to Richard's vocals I really like. Neverending already highlighted the clever lyrics but it's the almost Nazareth-esque sound of Richard's voice that really nails it for me. I also gotta give props to the man on principle, as for it's time, I'm willing to but this was the most blistering record anyone had made up to that point. There's a clear influence on bands like Thin Lizzy and really ever rock band that followed probably owes Little Richard some debt.

Alright, new album. My random number generator spat out number 346 which corresponds to the 2013 Arctic Monkeys album AM Not really a band I've ever gotten to into but I'm interested in giving them a shot. This album is said to be something of a departure from their usual sound. Round should go until October 26th

I was about to say, “didn’t this win the Grammy” and then realized that’s Arcade Fire.
We’re off to a great start.

I just turned it on this very moment. Christ, this first track Do I Wanna Know was played non-fucking-stop on LA radio when it dropped, I'm sure you guys got the same treatment. I got XM when I bought my current car and never looked back. With any luck this will be the last time I ever listen to this song for the rest of my life. But hey, there's 11 more songs after this, maybe I'll dig those.

Not a fan. There’s good tracks like Party Anthem and Snap Out Of It , but most of it is pretty bland. Don’t know why this got singled out by Rolling Stone when 2013 had much better music. And yeah, PG Cooper / thebtskink , come at me.

Arctic monkeys are a great band to see in person. Dudes a rock star and he knows it, dresses up, great crowd banter, interesting covers. This album had them go fully into arena rockers for better or worse.
Their first two albums were on heavy rotation in college, still some bangers on there (a certain romance, bet you look good on the dance floor and fluorescent adolescent are stand outs) but this album was certainly a commercial step forward, I find the lyrics to be pretty bland here but not offensively so.
A friend's wife is obsessed so we go pretty much every time they come to town. Always a solid opening band, and again the shows solid. They aren't boring like most indie bands you see live (looking at you spoon) they keep their shows energetic and exciting and put money into their light show (which I always appreciate).
That said I don't think this would be anywhere near my top 500.

Thought it was fairly bland on a first listen but grew on me the second time around. "R U Mine?" is an energetic toe-tapper, "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High" is quite catchy, and "Knee Socks" and "I Wanna Be Yours" close things out nicely. I can't see this album going into my constant rotation, but it does have an appeal and if some of these songs were used in the right movie scene or trailer I could see myself really digging it. Might even try to give this another listen before we move on.

Just realized I never actually commented on the album myself.
I had not heard much of The Arctic Monkeys before listening to this, most of what I had knowingly heard from them had sounded fine but not distinct enough for me to seek out more. It's my understanding that they kind of started their career as a jaunty britpop band and that this album took them in a new and slightly more dour direction. When I turned on the album the first thing I thought was "huh, this kind of sounds like The Black Keys." In fact I think I may have heard that big single "Do I Wanna Know?" at some point in a commercial or something and just assumed it was The Black Keys. I did a quick google search and it turns out that they actually did tour with The Black Keys around the time they made this so that's probably not a total coincidence. Don't really know enough about either band to call this a ripoff or anything but being "like the Black Keys" is not necessarily a compliment coming from me as it's kind of synonymous with "amiable 21st century commercial rock." And there's nothing particularly wrong with that, but it probably isn't what I want on my top 500 album lists. On the other hand, the penultimate track on the album is built around the line "like the beginning of Mean Streets you could be my baby" so I can't be too mad at it.
Will start a new round shortly.

Alright, this time the random number generator spit out number 439, which corresponds to... Sex Machine by James Brown
A 1970 album made in the middle of the artist's hard funk era.

It’s a fake live album. You can listen to most of these songs on his 1960’s albums. This is the only track worth listening to:

Bootsy and catfish collins are both featured on this album and is one of the main reasons it's so revered. They only worked with brown for a little under a year and were prolific as shit and just about everyone agrees it never got much better for jb after they left.

Right, I did listen to this album several weeks ago. Maybe I'll give it another listen so I can give it fresher thoughts, but it was mostly pretty good. I did feel the length, which is maybe more reflective of the genre not really being in my wheelhouse than the album itself. I do agree with Neverending that the first track is probably the best. "Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine" is just a really infectious gem and Brown oozes coolness.

We didn't get a whole lot of talk about this one, but I can kind of get why. I listened to it and liked it a lot but it doesn't necessarily leave you a whole lot to say about it. It's just a masterful funk band at the height of their power playing a lot of Brown's old songs very well. As previously stated about half of this is a fake live album, the other half I believe is a real live album. I can kind of see why they wanted to make the studio recordings feel like live recordings though because the focus here is really on the performance of these songs rather than the writing.
With the thread bumped I'll give people a day or two to post thoughts then start the next round.

Okay new album Random.org actually spit out number 498 which is the 1977 album Suicide by the band Suicide. It's been a while but I have listened to this one in the past, it's sort of early post-punk (despite predating much of actual punk) in that it applied punk intensity to instruments other than guitars. Should probably warn people that it's most famous song, the ten minute Frankie Teardrop, is... kind of depressing.

Question for the group.
The random number generator has mostly sent us to out of the way picks, but if I end up drawing a number that corresponds to a super well-known album that everyone already knows like Dark Side of the Moon or something do you guys just want to roll with that or would you rather I draw another number?
